The skirmish left Michael Coggins, 23, in a Nashville hospital with a knife wound in the back and Melvin Corey George, 22, in Bedford County Jail charged with aggravated assault, Officer Darrell Birdsong's report said.
The men live in separate units at Bedford Manor Apartments, on Barksdale Lane, where the stabbing occurred, police said.
Coggins told police he wanted to talk with George about the wives' alleged fight. As Coggins approached, police said, George allegedly pulled a knife from his pocket and cut Coggins' left forearm. An attempt by Coggins to take the knife away resulted on both on the ground scuffling, police said. Coggins told police he was hitting George, then felt a sharp pain in his back and was bleeding as he got up.
George said he stabbed in self-defense, fearing for his life, after Coggins walked up and began punching him in the head, according to police.
The knife allegedly used in the stabbing was found in George's apartment with blood on it, police said.
Coggins was taken to Heritage Medical Center for initial treatment, then transferred to Vanderbilt Medical Center by helicopter, reports indicate.
George is being held on $20,000 bond, jail records show.

"George said he stabbed in self-defense, fearing for his life, after Coggins walked up and began punching him in the head, according to police."
Funny, Coggins didn't mention beating the guy before getting stabbed. Somewhere in the middle is the truth...
Lamey,
Bartertown was powered by Methane gas from the pig farm they housed below ground. We looked into it but with the new proposed carbon credit Cap and Trade legislation proposed by the Gore/Obama administration we can not afford to keep pigs (or goats, or cows, or horses).
Without the Methane gas there is no Bartertown, so no Thunderdome.
Now if you can help me with the government backed minority owned business grant forms (oh, before anyone says anything "minority owned business" is not racist or sexist) necessary to get financing for solar or wind power, maybe we could get Bartertown off to a good start.
Two men enter, One man leave. Or in this case maybe it should have been the wives.
All that drama was so unnecessary. Should have just let them pull hair.
what started the women fighting? I think all 4 needs to be in jail.
if all of them would get a job. and quite living on tax pays money. If they worked maybe they would be tired when they came home. They would not be fighting. Where were there kids at when all of this was going on.
I don't belive coggins. he would not got stabbed for noting. he had to started it melvin first. what do you think?
George has 6 small melter plats in his head when he was younger a tree fell on him. he liked to died.
well well guess what i just find out coggins just got out of the pen. so jtjustice30 what do think about that. i blive george
Spell check anyone?
carter-please just stop talking....
may be i don't want to. coggins is nothing but trouble. he bets up on his wife. why did he go to jail? the spelling don't matter. when the truth is been told.
its so funny people run their mouth when they werent there and honestly have no idea what happened. "carter" just sounds like their holding a grudge against "coggins"..cuz obviously they know the man to know he has kids and ask where they were durin this cuz the story said nothing of kids so seriously grow up and quit holding your grudge!
which man are you talking about.george or coggins? was you there? no i don't have a grudge. i know both of them.they both were lucky that no one is dead.it sounds like you have a grudge for george.
