Wife happy husband made it back from Iraq

Sunday, June 21, 2009

A little more than three years ago, Luke Bowling had to coach his wife through the birth of their baby a half a world away.

"I was three months pregnant when he left," Patricia Bowling said. "He came home on a two-week leave when James was 6 days old and he didn't see him again until he was nine months old."

Thanks to modern technology, Luke was able to call in during the delivery. With the speaker on Patricia's belly, Luke was able to coach his wife through a portion of the delivery of their son, James.

He came home on a two-week leave about a week after their son was born, and then returned to Irag for another nine months. He was lucky enough to keep up with his son, thanks to web cams.

Now, Luke, 26, has finished his duty with the National Guard, and works for B&W Excavating and as a youth minister for Edgemont Baptist Church. Luke and Patricia have another son, Blaine, 16 months old.

Patricia remembers the challenges of not having Luke around, and this year she's showing her appreciation for her husband -- and him being home -- on Father's Day.

"He's a very good father," Patricia said. "He's big into sports and the boys love playing with him ... and he's very funny. The boys are a lot like their dad."

Last week, Luke was away for a youth camp, and the boys were very much looking forward to his return.

And for Patricia, James and Blaine, Father's Day will be about showing Luke how much they love him.

"We'll go to my dad's house for lunch and then we'll probably come home and spend time together -- just the four of us," she said.
