Unfortunately for the local boys of summer, they dropped their other three contests down in the Heart of Dixie.
Connor Tracy backed Burchett's effort at the plate with three singles. Sam Davis started on the mound.
Ladd Rhodes homered for one of his three hits for the Stars.
Hattiesburg (Miss.) 4, Shelbyville 1: In Post 23's first action of the tournament, they fell behind 2-0 in the first inning thanks to a two-run home run from Bryn Whitehead.
Shelbyville got the leadoff man on in four of their seven trips to the dish. Phillip Heikkinen singled to get the fourth frame started. After he was forced out on a fielder's choice off the bat of Burchett, Davis came through with a two-out single.
Burchett was the losing pitcher.
Hattiesburg 9, Shelbyville 2: Tyler Vannatta and Jeremy Estill both touched home as Tracy and Michael Watkins banged out hits in a quick start offensively for Post 23. They held a 2-1 advantage until the bottom of the fourth where the Bombers erupted for five runs on four hits.
Estill toted the rubber first for Shelbyville before being relieved by Justin Brewer in the fifth.
Mississippi 5, Shelbyville 4: Post 23 took control early again by posting a two-spot in the opening inning, but they lost their upper hand in the sixth.
Brewer had two hits in a losing cause.
