Shelbyville Senior American Legion Post 23 appeared to be cruising to a doubleheader sweep over the Tennessee Thrashers when a solo home run in the fifth and final inning knotted the contest at 3-all.
J.T. Nelson apparently had no desire to see the game go to extra innings on a hot Thursday night as he belted a walk-off bast to give Shelbyville a 4-3 victory.
Post 23 starting pitcher Jordan Burchett struggled with his release point in the early going but settled in to last all five frames.
Tyler Vannatta knocked in two runs with a double in the Shelbyville half of the second inning.
Shelbyville 4, Thrashers 2: Michael Watkins' mound performance in the afternoon portion of the double-dip left Thrashers hitters confused and complaining. The right-hander worked five innings and finished the game by pumping in a strikeout on the inside corner to leave the visitors scratching their heads.
Watkins also helped himself at the plate by laying down a bunt single, reaching second on an errant throw and scoring an insurance run late in the game.
Post 23 trots back onto the diamond Sunday when they head north to face Baxter at Upperman High School at 2 p.m.

Boy critically hurt in swimming pool accident
Greg Altum / Tullahoma News
A 14-year-old Manchester boy was in critical care at Vanderbilt Medical Center after reportedly suffering a broken neck and near drowning Monday, authorities said.
Cody Holder, a member of the freshman baseball team at Coffee County Central High School, was at his residence on Cathey Ridge Road when he attempted to dive into a pool three to four feet high, according to an Ambulance Authority official.
The official said Holder's father may have saved his son's life by administering CPR for which he was trained.
Coffee County Ambulance Service was notified at 2:53 p.m. and Cody was later airlifted to Vanderbilt, where he was scheduled to undergo surgery today.
He was listed in critical but stable condition Tuesday by a hospital spokesman.
Please pray for this boy. He was a great baseball player and loved the game. I hope that people that love baseball as much as he, will pray for him and his family, and if you don't pray keep them in your thoughts.
