Shelbyville police are investigating a homicide they say occurred due to a robbery.

The body of Anthon Mario Matthews, 31, was found at his East Lane Trailer Park residence by maintenance workers around noon Monday, Detective Sgt. Brian Crews of the Shelbyville Police Department said. Matthews was known as "Yo" or "Mac-Yo" on the streets, Crews said.

"We think he was murdered when a robbery was being committed," Crews said. "The exact cause of death is unknown but he suffered injuries to the head. We're leaning toward gunshot wounds."

The cause of death was determined by the state medical examiner's officer to be a gunshot wound to the head, Crews said later this morning.

No money or drugs were found in the residence, according to Crews. Signs of a struggle were apparent, the detective said.

Investigators are unsure when the murder took place, but Crews said the last time Matthews had spoken to anyone was Thursday night.

Crews said there are no suspects as of yet.

"Matthews has no police record here," Crews said. "He does have a previous record elsewhere of possession of drugs for resale. We feel like drugs were a contributing factor to his death and that he was in town selling drugs. We're confident he was a drug dealer."

Matthews' body was at the state crime lab in Nashville this morning for an autopsy, Crews said, with Detective Charles Merlo and SPD evidence technician Bill Logue observing. An exact cause of death was expected to be determined later today.

"We got a call about possible abandoned dogs -- maintenance workers had called city animal control, who aren't authorized to go into apartments," Crews said. "Maintenance people opened the door and found the body."

The victim is originally from Memphis, Crews said, and has also lived in Tullahoma. Matthews had lived in the East Lane trailer since April, investigators said.

The body was in relatively good condition considering the heat and the time it had been in the home, Crews said.

"No money or drugs were found in the residence, according to Crews."

I'm guessing there was other obvious signs of drug activity in the home (i.e. paraphernalia or witnesses) to lead investigators to conclude this guy was a drug dealer. Of course, he could have been under investigation by the Drug Task Force...that would be a huge clue. Sad he is dead, but if he was polluting our city with illegal drugs then good riddance to bad rubbish!

you know, the police were at this trailer and saw what they saw. You were not there and unless you know this person better than any one else you really can't make the assumption that he wasn't a drug dealer. They have been trained to observe the scene and assess it. You arm chair detectives need to let the police do what they are trained to do and stop nit picking every thing they do. you may need them some day. Sometimes cops make mistakes and newspapers misprint things, but come on. I guess you are one of those that never makes mistakes or misquotes anything. Oh to be so PERFECT

Way to go ZULUDAWN. Good for you. It would seem that justice has nothing better to do than to sit and read comments all day and sit in judgement. How sad that one day he to will face the ultimate Judge. No one should be happy to see a person killed because he was an assumed drug dealer. Sir none of us are perfect, but you, it seems. How sad.

Both of all don't know nothing so please next time try not to comment on something dealing with murder next time.Just in case YALL didn't know he is in a much better place than on earth. Please remember GOD IS IN CONTROL not the person who did it. Respect the family!

Wow...you guys are takin it kinda personal...In case you haven't noticed, I am always the first to stand up and take notice of the great work our local law enforcement does in this town. I am always the first to defend them when something negative is said about them. As for "sitting in judgment" I am doing nothing of the sort...I'm simply stating what I'm sure others are thinking. I didn't say I was "happy" the victim is dead..in fact I said it was sad. All I said is that "if" the victim were a drug dealer (which no one but the police knows for sure) then it is not exactly a tragedy that he is no longer here to spread narcotics in our neighborhoods and around our children. Now, if you want to defend the upstanding morals of a person like that, be my guest. But, I for one am sick and tired of people who come to our town to commit crime! (Of course, I'm also sick of the locals who go around committing crime.)

WOW another dead body in shelbyville! Our crime rate is just getting worse by the hour around here!

Saying "good riddance" to a dead person is the same as saying glad you are gone, in this case dead. That is still someones family member you are wishing dead, and of course people are going to get offended by it. The same as you would if it was yours.

Give me a break folks...get off your moral high-horse. You know as well as I do that I just said what others were thinking. Guess I could have phrased it in a bit "softer" way, but I said what I meant and I meant what I said. People make decisions that have consequences...sometimes those consequenses are minimal...sometimes they aren't. Regardless, the person(s) who committed this crime will be brought to justice and they will pay for what they did. It's not like I think the shooter(s) should get a free pass...just the opposite. And if it were my family member, I can say with some certainty that I would be sad at their death, but not surprised. And if my family member were a drug dealer as is alleged in this instance, I would not be surprised if folks said negative things about them. People are sick and tired of this kind of activity in their neighborhoods. I have two felons (both considered violent) in my family so I think I have some experience in this area. I have watched my family suffer over the years from the stuff those jerks have put them through. So, maybe I'm a bit biased.

THIS IS MY FAMILY MEMBER AND LETS SEE HOW YOU WOULD LIKE IT IF SOMEONE KILLED YOUR "FELON" FAMILY MEMBERS. MURDER IS WRONG NO MATTER WHAT THE CIRCUMSTANCES. WHO ARE WE TO TAKE SOMEONES LIFE. FOR YOU TO SET HERE AND TO BE JUDGING HIM BECAUSE HES ASSUMED TO BE A DRUG DEALER, DRUG DEALERS WOULDNT HAVE A JOB IF YOUR FAMILY WOULD QUIT SMIKIN DOPE!!!! JESUS IS THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN JUDGE US AND IN THE SAME YOU JUDGE HIM CHRIST WILL JUDGE YOU.

Wendy3000,

Aren't you a little ashamed to admit you are related to a drug dealing felon?

Anyway, good riddance to this piece of filth. Fortunately, he is off the streets for good.

All of us have the same enemy, SATAN. Matter of fact, most people who appear to be worthless (drug addicts, prostitutes, murderers, etc.) are those that have great assignments on this earth from God and satan knows it. We should have compassion for all souls and pray for salvation and deliverance. If you cannot identify with this message, then I know you had better not judge because satan is on your path, too.

Yes he was a drug dealer and he beat the crap out of me and two of his x friend's that I know of, but that doesn't give me or anyone else the right to judge him. There is, however, still a judge. And he knows everything that goes on down here before it is ever a thought that runs across our unknowing minds. Karma is also a bitch. She will, undoubtedly, bite u in the ass every time! Yo had a good heart. Thank God he did not have any children because they would have suffered most of all. I wish I could have known Mario before he got so caught up in a life that would not release its grip on him. No one has the right to judge him and we should all b thankful that there is only one true judge because what a terrible place this would b if the "judgements" of our peers held any weight. May God comfort and console his family members and those who morn him. And lets not forget Tiger. Tiger probably knew what was left of Mario's heart and I know he is missing him and he cant even tell anyone!

jtjustice30,

How sad it must b to b so ignorant! I hope in other areas of your life u are near perfect, because judgement is meted out most harshly on those who judge. When someone u know gets put in a position where they have to "pay for their" indiscretion I hope maybe u will be bit more lenient with ur judgements. Maybe then u will realize U R NOT PERFECT! Pride comes before a fall.

May God be with all of you guys. And amen...Pride does come before a fall. I will always consider Yo family and no I will never be ashamed of anything he has done. And I pray God will have mercy on all you people that chose to hold judgement in your own hands. Youre biting off way more than you can chew.
