Ironwork's Tin Man had a good year in 2008. The big 17-hand horse -- a polished gray that looks like liquid silver -- won six blues on the show circuit last year in the amateur categories, including the Amateur Show Pleasure World Grand Championship at the Celebration. Is he, or are his owners Grant and Steve Jones, ready to rest on their laurels? Not likely. The 13-year-old stallion won the stake class at the 103rd Wartrace Horse Show Saturday night.

"We've decided to go for the big one," said Steve.

Originally purchased in 2003 by their father, Ray, who died later that year, Tin Man has been shown in amateur classes until now. With Chad Way up as the trainer, the gray is competing with the pros now.

It wasn't an easy field to beat, either. According to Nancy Edwards, a coordinator for the show, there were more horses entered this year than there have been in previous years, and there were seven stallions facing off in the final class. The top five were: Winner Ironwork's Tin Man, shown by Chad Way, owned by Ray Jones Trucking; Reserve Jazz Country, shown by Tim Smith, owned by G.L. and Beverly McNeill; third place Push Too's Cowboy, shown by Knox Blackburn, owned by Anita George; fourth I'm Bob Hope, shown by Justin Harris, owned by Tammy Heiman; and fifth, Flash of Silver, shown by Stephen Daniel, owned by Willis Bowman.

Ironwork's Tin Man was clearly a crowd favorite as he splashed around the ring, followed and encouraged by whistles, cheers and shouts.

The show started late that night because of rain, and horses and riders spent the evening covered in plastic sheets and mud. A tractor remained on call -- and in constant use -- pulling cars and trailers out of the muddy fields.

"As soon as we're clear of the lightning, we'll start with the weanling fillies," announcer Bobby Sands said well after the original 6 p.m. start time. By 8 p.m., a few sprinkles were all that were left from the massive storm front -- and a morass of mud, water and gravel that everyone splashed through or dodged around.

"He doesn't like umbrellas," one owner laughed as her colt edged nervously way from the rail.

The crowd was small due to the weather, but the dedicated fans braved wet and wind, holding umbrellas, wearing galoshes, and trying to find cover whenever they could.

Dr. Doyle Meadows, CEO of the Celebration, was present to watch the show and present a trophy. He had also gone to the show in Belfast Friday night. Gen on the Run with Link Webb up and owned by Michael and Ty Hart was the big winner there.

"It went great," said Meadows.

The USDA inspectors, for the first time in several years, did not make an appearance at either show.

I usually don't even read stories about the horse shows, but for some reason I read this one. That horse is so striking, he reminds me of a horse my grandpa owned years ago...not a walker or as big, but she was just as beautiful. Nice to see the inspectors kept their noses out of the show...I'm about sick to death of hearing about those folks.
