Newell Rubbermaid jobs moving to Shelbyville

Sunday, August 9, 2009

Newell Rubbermaid informed employees on Friday that it would consolidate its Maryville distribution operations into the Shelbyville distribution center by early next year, affecting 40 jobs in Maryville.

Displaced Maryville employees will have the option to apply for open positions at Newell Rubbermaid's manufacturing facility there or at the Shelbyville distribution facility.

In November 2008, the company announced a reorganization of its manufacturing and distribution facilities which resulted in production of the Sharpie marker moving from Shelbyville to Maryville. That reorganization, along with the decision in July 2008 to drop certain low-margin product lines, has resulted in a planned reduction in Newell Rubbermaid's sales volume, according to an e-mail from spokeswoman Connie Bryant.

"Additionally," she wrote, "this corresponds with our plans for our Maryville facility to be a center of excellence for manufacturing markers, highlighters and dry erase products, while Shelbyville will be our center of excellence for distribution."

The company says it will attempt to assist the affected employees in Maryville.

"While this change is necessary for us to remain competitive, we understand the impact it will have on affected employees and their families. Our focus is now on assisting them during this transition. We will provide support by offering outplacement services, opportunities to earn additional money through operations and safety incentive programs while the distribution center continues to operate and by providing supplemental unemployment pay once employment ends," wrote Bryant.

Oh? So am I reading this correctly? The people who are laid off in Maryville can come to Shelbyville and take the jobs that they told the employees at Sanford they could get?

A lot of employees at Sanford here in Shelbyville applied for jobs that are being moved to Maryville and was turned down. Now they are going to let people from Maryville apply for what few jobs that are left. All of the better paying jobs went to Maryville and the Shelbyville employees get the left overs. People who have been doing those jobs for years and is now left with nothing. Dedicated employees mean nothing to big companies anymore.

What bull! They laid off full time employees to just bring people in from Maryville?! Newell Rubbermaid, you suck!

Ed Craig and your illustrial leaders at their best again. Bet Somolians or illegals or others get the majority of the jobs. Do I have any bets. All I can say is stay ready for the rapture, don't be one of those that have a lot of explaining to do. If you loose everything just be humble, like the street folks, cause you can't beat the crooks alone, remember united we stand, all americans have to come together, remember god bless the USA, how can we ask god to bless us when we have crooks as leaders. Repent and get right, and then get blessed

This question may be a LITTLE off this subjuect but here goes.

Does anyone know if SANFORD employees who have been laid off are eligible to get unemployment while going to school?? Are they eligible for TRA TAA?? Just wandering..I mean there are so few jobs here. Why not while looking for a job also go to a TECH school or maybe even a local college.

I don't know the answer to your question but if you are looking at going to the TECH school here then I'll tell you this I DO know there is already a waiting list for EVERY class they have that is a year wait to get in. I would be interested t know if you could get unemployment and go to school s well...What about some of the busisness schools in the area like Nashville Business in Nashville or Draughn's in Murfreesboro? Would it be possible to get into one of those schools and still get unemployment? Maybe som one could start a blog for this purpose. I'm sure you are not alone in your questions.

All I see are complaints...shouldn't we be happy the jobs are coming here and not shutting down the distrubution center and moving it away like the manufacturing plant.

I am sure your arrogance didn't let you think that many of those on unemployment already have tech degrees, associate degrees, and actually baschelor degrees in salable skills. This effects elibility. From what I understand, classes for tech jobs like Electrician and HVAC are plum full all the way to Kentucky, with few jobs waiting. Thanks Democrat congress!

There are no jobs in this awful town. I guess most of them are taken by people who are not supposed to be here. Its only gonna get worse folks!! You might as well get ready!! Thanks all of you democratic voters!! Job well done!!

Unless you have unlimited resources at your disposal, avoid Draughons at all costs!!!

jaysgirl,

What kind of voters do you expect us to be? Because it is impossible to elect a dictator, a king or a ruler.

it looks to me like they would have offered the jobs to the employees who were laid off in shelbyville and not the maryville employees but it is like all the employees at sanford they can start them at minimum wage instead of keeping the experienced workers and pay them what they were making.

jaysgirl,

Yes, there are not manny jobs in this town. That is why I work out of town. Better pay, more options.

It never ceases to amaze me how quickly people are to blame what is going on in this economy on Democrats when this all started while a Republican was in office. If Republicans were still in office exactly who would we blame then?

I think it's wrong for Shelbyville jobs to be offered to Maryville employees as well but I don't think you can blame any government, local or federal, for the decisions of the corporation announcing it.

I'm with my2centsworth, they announce the addition of 40 jobs that we don't have, and as a collective communtity, all we seem to do is b*tch about it. The jobs that were lost in the past are gone, and griping and whining won't bring them back. I imagine few in Maryville will uproot their families... leaving the majority of these jobs for Shelbyvillians. Let's quit griping about it.

Awesome. Relocation, is offered buy nearly every large industrial company. Nissan did it, when they relocated their headquarters from California to Cool Springs. So it is not a Democrat or Republican issue, it is an American business's decision. At the end of the day, this is capitalism, and a consequence of it.
