Shelbyville will soon see some growth near Heritage Medical Center with the planned construction of two new medical office buildings.

Next week, Shelbyville's planning commission will consider site plans for two structures -- a 30,000-square foot, two-story medical office building to be located on Frank Martin Road across from the Bedford County Emergency Medical Service offices and a 16,000-square foot office building slated to be built on Airport Business Park Drive adjacent to Heritage Medical Center.

The site plan for the 16,000 square foot structure was submitted by Shane McFarland Construction, and is to be an addition to Heritage's medical campus that will contain testing facilities, according to Harold Segroves of Coldwell Banker Segroves Nelson Real Estate, who is working with the hospital on the project.

Green described the building as shaped like an upside down "L" with the structure opening up toward Airport Business Park.

Heritage CEO Dan Buckner said Thursday that he anticipated that the hospital will keep working with Segroves "as we continue to add medical staff to Heritage."

However, Buckner said it was too early to say exactly what was to be in the building and that more details would be forthcoming as they are worked out.

The 30,000-square-foot building is to be called Russell Plaza, after Dr. William Russell, who has requested the site plan. City planning and codes director Kip Green explained that the building is the first phase of a medical office complex.

The second phase will be constructed behind the proposed plaza, Green said.

Russell Plaza will have parking surrounding the structure and "is very nicely designed ... well landscaped, very appealing," according to Green.

"From the size of it, it would leave you to believe that it will house doctors' offices," Green speculated.

Principal architect John Davis of Davis Stokes in Brentwood confirmed that the building will be used primarily for office space for local physicians.

Buckner said that Heritage will continue to collaborate with Dr. Russell to use space in that building as well, but also added it was too early to speculate on the building's exact use.

A groundbreaking date will be announced in the future, Buckner said.

The planning commission will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday in the courtroom at Shelbyville Police Department.

I have a question... How is this going to affect the people who live on Frank Martin?? Are the construction crews going to block the road partially like they did when the Bedford County Emergency Medical Service offices were built. I have no problem with the medical building being built, but why there?? Why in a peaceful, residential area?

It is only natural for the doctors' offices to be closer to the hospital.

Look at the previous location and the Medical Arts Building was right behind it. Look at Murfreesboro. Both MTMC and the new facility have many doctors' offices/complexes close to them.

Why would you not want to be closer to the hospital in the event you are sent for tests or heaven forbid but it is discovered you have something wrong with you that requires immediate transfer to the hospital?

Another thing, Bedford County General was in or very close to a residential neighborhood(s) as well.

I don't mind being close to the hospital, but Frank Martin is a small two lane road. In the field that the offices are going to be built is nothing but open field with cows and a couple of donkeys that roam around it.

Bedford County General was located around other businesses, like the car lot that closed, grocery store, etc.

Out here the only business that is near the hospital is the Nissan dealership and a small bank. Other than that it is homes and farms.

Did you forget the WalMart DC and the old Summit Polymers facility? Growth is inevitable, so long as it is carefully planned and executed, will it be enjoyable.

Don't forget the airport, the two convenience stores, the tractor supply, the race track, the storage place, the restaurant in Deason, the Flea Market, several chicken farms...

Oh and its on a Dual Highway... with an adjacent 2 lane road. Not the other way around.
