School ransacked but safe does its job

Wednesday, September 2, 2009

An unsuccessful attempt was made to gain access to the safe at Thomas Magnet School, Tate Avenue, over the weekend, Shelbyville police said Tuesday.

School officials said $50 was taken from the School Age Care Program office and three sets of keys to the building are missing, according to Officer Josh Leverette's report.

Power was cut to parts of the building and the door to a room housing the safe was beaten, police said.

Office and classroom desks were ransacked, food was eaten in the cafeteria and candy taken from classrooms, a label machine was used and cigarettes smoked throughout the building, the report said.

Police said it would be impossible to determine if anything else was taken from desks until teachers return Sept. 8.

Entry was gained through an open door, police said.

Tailgate taken

The tailgate and reverse camera were stolen between 7 and 10:30 p.m. Monday from a 2008 Ford F-450 King Ranch pickup truck at the Celebration cash parking lot along Celebration Drive, police said.

Radios stolen

Radio/CD players were stolen over the weekend from two boats and two trucks at Pirtle & Howerton Automotive, North Main Street, Shelbyville police said Tuesday.

The boats were located behind the dealership, police said, while both trucks -- one left for repairs and the other one taken in through the Cash for Clunkers program -- were entered by breaking windows.

This is what happens when you have a school in the projects. My child attends Thomas and I really do not like the location. It is a horrible place to have a school.

Just because of the location of the school doesn't mean the residents of the housing authority had anything to do with the break in.

Shame on you pixie!

You should not call that area a "project". It is low cost affordable housing that is government subsidized for those less fortunate than you. Then to imply the school and its children are in jeopardy because of its location is just un-American.

It is because of comments like yours that these people continue to be stigmatized.....

PoorMe, give me a scripted off-the-shelf- propoganda brainwashed break. What is Un-American is having to have a " low cost affordable housing that is government subsidized for those less fortunate than you" in the first place.

People may not like the location of the school but that school and the public housing has been there for yrs and it wasn't a problem before, and yes I have a child that goes to school there and we knew where we were sending them before we signed them up!

Quitemike,

Gotcha..... you should know better than that, I only drink unsweetened Kool-Aid.

Okay maybe I was a little harsh but that particular area, Tate St has been a high drug traffic area ever since I can remember and yes I knew where I was sending my child,I will not deprive him of that type of education.Let's face it though,Shelbyville is going down the drain fast. The crime rate is outrageous now.I grew up here and the last few years have been terrible.

PoorMe...you should call up JR Powers and polish up your acting skills.

East side, quitemike...learn to spot satire. If you paid attention to half of PoorMe's posts then you would realize that it was a joke.

I cannot believe how hateful America has become to those less fortunate. There was a time when we felt compelled to help and lift up those that were down and out. Now, we just kick them while they're down and move on. What is this America coming to? I have always given to those that needed a lift, even when I was struggling. Do I regret it? Never. I felt it was imperative to the wellbeing of the human race. I hope that all of you never have to suffer from a lack--a lack of money, a lack of health, or a lack of housing--what a conundrum you would find yourself in. Yes, crime is up, the economy is down and people are suffering. My, my, as we polish those Christian crowns, try to remember that!

Grannyoldknow,

It is not that Americans are not companionate or sympatric to those less fortunate. By choice we still give to charities and people in need everyday, but it is by choice. I am so tired the government "Stealing" money from me to give to those who are only less fortunate because they are to lazy to take care of themselves and their families. Why should I be forced to pay someone to drop out of school and have 3 children before they are 20 YO? Why can't I take that money and give it to my neighbor that has medical problems or has lost their job? Why can't I give it to someone who has made poor choices and is now working hard to improve their situation instead of it being forcibly "taken" from me and given to those who just want it because they have been trained to believe getting other peoples money is their right?

You say you have always given to those in need and you felt it was "imperative to the wellbeing of the human race". We all agree. It is just that we disagree on who the money should be given to. I want to give money, not have it taken from me, and I want it to go to the people I feel deserve and need it. I don't need or want someone in Washington, bribed by those with socialist agendas, making those decisions for me.

From what I have seen in my life poor people were much better off before the government started helping.

It is interesting that "label machine was used" by the thieves. Usually they take the label printer too.

Police should check the carbon spool in the label maker (or the memory) to see what words were made -- perhaps the thieves were dumb enough to make their names and take souvenir labels with them.
