James Edward Garrett, 21, allegedly tried to outrun a deputy who attempted to pull him over on Belmont Avenue about 10:30 a.m., Sheriff Randall Boyce said.
"We already had five or six charges on him," Boyce said. "He hit one of our patrol cars twice and another once."
No injuries occurred during the chase, Boyce said.
Garrett eventually came to a stop on Depot Street near, ironically, the refueling station for city and county patrol vehicles.
New and accrued charges against Garrett include aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, evading arrest, DUI, reckless driving, implied consent, possession of a schedule VI drug, violation of probation, leaving the scene of an accident, failing to file immediate notice of an accident and two counts each of possession of a schedule II drug and driving on a revoked/suspended license,
Garrett is being held at Bedford County Jail, Boyce said.
Thefts
A man who allegedly stole a cell phone at a Shelbyville store Friday refused the owner's demands to return it, police said.
The phone fell off the trunk of the owner's car, where he had left it while pumping gas at Kroger, North Main Street, police said.
Moments after the driver left, he realized where the phone had been and returned to the store, according to police.
A witness told the owner a man in a green car stopped, picked up the phone and left.
The owner called his phone and told the thief that Kroger had him on video. The person who answered hung up and turned off the phone, police said.
