To the Editor:
I have had a very upsetting situation to happen recently.
My great granddaughter, Rylei Hale, was put into developmental kindergarten at Community School by her mother, Amber Hale. She put her in Community School as we keep her during the week while her parents are at work at irregular hours and we live in the Community School district with the bus coming right by our house.
After Rylei had been in school a week, her Mother received a call from the Board of Education telling her that Rylei could not go to Community School as they did not live in that school district and told her to come get her that day. Her parents do live in the Liberty school District. Her mother was at work and told Mr. Looper at the Board of Education that she could not come get her that fast.
Rylei was tested at school and the developmental kindergarten was what she tested to be in. Liberty School does not offer this class.
After talking to Ron Adcock, Amy Martin, and Diane Neeley, who are on the school board, and Mr. Ed Gray, Mr. Looper, and Ms. Farrar, at the Board of Education, all informed us that there were no waivers and she had no choice but to enroll her at Liberty or take her out of school.
We are constantly hearing "No Child Left Behind" but our school officials could care less that Rylei was tested to be in developmental kindergarten and Liberty School does not offer that, making Rylei start behind.
It is a shame that nine people on the school board can make a rule that no one can break, no matter what the case.
Also, Rylei was in a class of twelve students and now that class isn't even full. A space is available but we can't put her in that class? What a shame .... No child left behind!!! What a joke!!

Cap and Trade scheme not best for America
To the editor:
Although the House passed the Waxman/Markey climate change legislation this summer and succeeded in including a cap-and-trade scheme as part of the bill, it is not what is best for the American public financially or environmentally. When the Senate takes up energy legislation this fall, they instead should consider a carbon tax proposal that will reduce emissions and give money back to Tennesseans and Americans.
The cap-and-trade bill that passed in the House and that could be proposed in the Senate is a pork-laden bill that leaves no transparency and does little to help the environment. Solutions need to be offered that reduce the effects of climate change, but they need to be the right solutions. Th e answer to our problems is not a system that confuses the majority of the American public and lawmakers while increasing taxes on industry and the American family.
A carbon tax plan that returns 90 percent of the revenues from the tax in the form of tax relief to the people and businesses that use the taxed energy will reduce carbon emissions and offset the tax hikes and energy costs that Americans will pay. In a cap-and-trade scheme that money is absorbed by the government instead of being given back to the people who pay for it. In fact, a carbon tax that recycles its revenue would give nearly $3.6 trillion to households and businesses which would be large enough to reduce the annual payroll tax rate for workers and businesses by two percentage points and cut carbon emissions by as much as current cap-and-trade proposals.
Let's find a solution to climate change that focuses less on making money to expand the government and more on helping the environment in a way that doesn't harm Americans and American businesses!

Eat fruits, vegetables to cut pancreatic cancer
To the editor:
I was saddened to hear about legendary actor Patrick Swayze's death. His brave, public fight against pancreatic cancer inspired many others. Millions of Americans will miss him, and people are also looking for ways to protect themselves from this deadly disease.
Pancreatic cancer is almost impossible to cure. But as a dietitian, I know that diet and lifestyle changes can help prevent this disease. According to a new study, fat from red meat and dairy products significantly increases the risk of pancreatic cancer. Researchers analyzed the diets of more than 525,000 participants to determine whether there is an association between dietary fat and pancreatic cancer. The study found no association between plant-food fat and pancreatic cancer.
Fruits, vegetables, and other low-fat vegetarian foods could actually prevent pancreatic cancer, according to other studies. One study found that consuming foods rich in flavonoids--apples, grapefruit, broccoli, and berries--may decrease pancreatic cancer risk by up to 59 percent. For more information about how a healthy diet can help prevent cancer, go to www.CancerProject.org.

You have hit it right on the nail. The no child left behind is a joke. I have a child who was left behind. And sad to say it was Community who did it. I know that a lot of parents have high regards for Community School, as for me their attention is for only certain students. I have not a whole lot to say about the high school authority. But since, have started my smallest child in town, and I am very impressed with how different it is ran.
Ms. Jones, Please leave some contact information. I have some awesome rights and regulations to share with your family!! Your family has a very very bright side to this situation. I work with families everyday who's children are gaining access to an education, in their district, with transportation, no waivers needed!!
It's a big elephant in the room called...IDEA, those are your granddaughters Federal Rights to an education, that umbrella's her placement, her transportation, her access to programs that are well funded by the Gov't.
The B.O.E. won't tell you about it, but I'll even meet you there to explain it all to you!
I truly admire you're comments, what you're family faces, over a thousand other families in the district do not know. In the meantime, keep documenting!! Surprisingly, that's only 9% of our student population, don't let anyone perceive that number as large, it's a small percentage, that's why your family has been treated in such a manner. She'll either go to Liberty, or they'll put a program in place at Community!! :)It's her right, if she's tested with developmental issues, she most likely can be protected. Let me know if you want this information, you need it, once they know you have been well informed of your rights, NO ONE ELSE WILL TELL YOU TO TAKE THE CHILD OUT OF SCHOOL!!!
you may be disappointed in liberty but it is a great school.if you have any kind of problems they will help . my daughter went there from kindergarten to 8th grade. she is now in college and if it wasn't for the great teachers that she had at liberty, that took the time to help her she wouldn't be were she is today . so give them a chance , you'll see
My children have been "rezoned" to Community. We actually like the school but it is almost like my children are repeating the previous school year. I am hoping things pick up soon but it isn't looking like it will so far.
I have tried to support the school board on their decisions but I'm having some difficulty on this. My high school age child DID NOT have to transfer but did just to help my husband and I out because she will have to drive them home in the afternoon since we are still at work when they get out of school. When they were at their previous school this was not a problem.
My high school age child is really being left behind. Very few things are offered at the smaller schools. That's something we chose when the older child moved so i understand making some concessions but what about the little ones. MAKE SURE THAT THE SAME LEVEL OF EDUCATION IS IN ALL SCHOOLS BEFORE YOU FORCE US TO MOVE.
I would like to respond to FreedomofSpeech who is assuming information about and possibly misinforming Mrs. Jones. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act involves mandates affecting students with disabilities. Mrs. Jones' granddaughter being placed in a Developmental Kindergarten class does not qualify her for Special Education services. There are many children in the county attending DK who are merely young and/or lacking some prerequisite skills for Kindergarten. This does NOT mean that these students have a disability. I would also like to add that our county is doing a great job of trying to meet the needs of all students, with and without disabilities. The rezoning in my eyes is a way the county is trying to meet these needs by having students attend their assigned school so that the most appropriate services and classrooms can be set up in each school.
Thank you BedfordSpedTeacher:
NOW let's inform them one more time, Early Intervention Services, fully funded by Federal, State, and Local funds. It's the obligation of any system to find children who are "suspected" of disabilities. If a child is tested/qualifies, under a very large scope of exceptionalities, then they Are covered under special services. And Early Intervention is very detailed from what services can help these students meet goals comparable to their peers. There are certain percentages of deficeits these students may meet, I believe it's 39%. The regulations are very specific that it's Purpose IS to help those "younger/lacking in prerequisite skills!" Exactly what's it's Mission Statement Says!!
These childrens ages ranges from 3-5 for Early Intervention, ages 5-19 for other special services, accomodations, modifications, supports, and transition to adulthood services.
My own student is a product of the EIS, and has been in the system for fourteen years. I am very well informed of my rights and have a duty to inform others of there's. I would never mislead a parent, I myself have had to deal with the heartbreak of not knowing "Exceptional" did not mean outstanding.
Sing your praises for any school system you'd like, as long as I loose sleep over parents telling me what is being done to their children, then I will encourage them to become well informed, concerned parents.
If any child qualifies for a program that is NOT offered in their own school, then they have the Right to be transported to another. If a parent Does not want to transport their exceptional child to another school, that home school can provide the appropriate program as well.
There's nothing misleading intended in my statements, but I'll assure you 150% that I will help anyone who asks. If you want to PUBLISH that I don't know what I'm talking about, you should really be sure a Well Informed Parent isn't sitting behind the screen. Well Informed, Well Trained, Well received in higher depts other than your own local community.
THeir plea ISN"T for the school.....It's for the PROGRAM, after discussing their issues, they believe proper programming is the most appropriate. Your use of the word "appropriate" tells me you are well versed in your statements.
If you are making these statement towards me as a representative of Bedford Co. Schools....as your name represents, YOU HAVE VIOLATED THE PUBLIC TRUST YOU ARE ENLISTED TO. uh oh...Yes, I even know how the Bedford Co. Employee book reads, as well as the Code Of Ethics for Special Education teachers provided by the Tennessee Dept Of Special Education :)
And...DK is NOT offered @ Liberty. So rather than have a child be able to take advantage of a program they Qualify for, you just send them home?
Where's the truest form of Education then?
The original definition for "education" was: to bring out, nourish, access a learning atmosphere.
* "home" school means Zoned school!!! Not providing services for children who are home schooled.
Freedomof Speech, You go. The removal of DK at Liberty was likely a mistake. I was not at all impressed with that decision. As a matter of fact, I am very wary of the reasons for it, and find myself questioning the obviously selfish motivation behind it.
BedfordSPEDTeacher may actually believe what they write, but I have not actually seen that concern at the board level. I have however heard it from them before. They are exceedingly good at misdirection and explaining away serious issues with rhetoric about the needs of "all students" and "appropriate services" when their concern is clearly not for "all students". The children you defend are the ones that the schools are pushing away, who are becoming members of an increasingly larger proportion of second class citizens whose potentialities are never discovered, and whose shortcomings are highlighted and propagated throughout not only their school-aged years, but their entire lives.
I hope you do get in touch with the writer of this letter and give the board a hard time. I doubt it will do much good without state or judicial intervention, but it may. Good luck.
