Bullet misses, but man thought he'd been shot

Tuesday, September 29, 2009
A Shelbyville man who thought he had been shot in the head Sunday in an argument over $30 only suffered a deep gash, Shelbyville police said.

Tamra Shenell Whitley, 28, Woodbury Street, whose gun allegedly went off while she was using it to hit William G. Lynch of Shelbyville, has been charged with aggravated robbery, Bedford County Jail records indicate.

A teenage girl and two teenage boys have also been charged with aggravated robbery in the case, police said.

Officers rushed to North Main Street late Sunday afternoon after receiving a telephone call from Lynch's mother, who said he had been shot in the head and was walking along the street.

"She went to where he was and hit him upside the head with a loaded gun," Detective Sgt. Brian Crews said. "The gun went off but the bullet didn't hit him. The doctors didn't see an exit wound and realized he had not actually been shot."

Lynch, who met officers at Dollar General Market, told them he was at a Deery Street home when Whitley allegedly came to the door, began arguing and hit him before driving away.

Officers Jeff Goodrich and Jon Cook and Bedford County deputy Benjamin Burris spotted a car fitting the description of the suspect's, stopped it and arrested Whitley, who is being held on $75,000 bond.

Wreck victim ID'd

The victim of a single-vehicle accident on House Mountain Road at mid-afternoon Saturday has been identified as Walter Donnie Lloyd, 55, of Coop Road.

Lloyd lost control of his truck at a curve on a steep hill and ran off the roadway into a field, according to Chief Deputy David Williams Jr. of the Bedford County Sheriff's Department. Rescuers found Lloyd pinned under the truck's cab.

Caught on tape

Two persons have been charged with burglarizing a Cedar River Road home based on their recorded confessions to another person, police said.

Jaclyn Nashae Bowman, 23, Cunningham Lane, and Angel Marie Roehrig, 25, Cherokee Trail, have been charged with aggravated burglary and theft of property, police said. Each posted $10,000 bond at Bedford County Jail.

"The witness called the offenders on the phone and called them by name and got them to incriminate themselves by their own mouth(s)," Officer Bobby Peacock's report said.

The person described as the "witness" said the women came to his home and asked for an undescribed "favor" which he denied, Peacock said. The women then went to a neighboring home; the "witness" thought it suspicious and called the residents, who came home to find the house "ransacked" and a flat screen TV, two DVD players, DVDs, clothing and a flat iron for hair missing, police said.

Another neighbor told police he saw two persons removing the TV and clothing through a window.

Another fake $20

The latest in a series of incidents involving counterfeit $20 bills involved the attempted purchase of a tomato.

A suspect, described to police as standing 6-foot-1 with short blond hair and driving a gray Dodge Durango, asked an employee of The Market Place, North Cannon Boulevard, the cost of a single tomato Friday.

After being told the tomato would cost 50 cents, the customer said he only had a $20 bill. The employee said he was busy and told the customer he could have the tomato for free, police said.

The customer insisted on paying, asked the cost of an entire basket of tomatoes and was told $3. After the customer paid and left, the employee became suspicious of the bill and notified police, who determined it was counterfeit.

Theft

Theft charges were filed against a man who allegedly admitted running from a store with a drill without paying Friday, police said.

An employee of Haynes Brothers Supply Co., Colloredo Boulevard, got a description of the truck in which the suspect left. Officer Jeff Goodrich saw a truck driven by Anthony Scott "Tony" May, 40, of Winchester, which matched the description of the suspect's, approximately 30 minutes later and did a traffic stop.

May handed over the Makita hammer drill to Goodrich, who said an employee of Haynes Brothers identified it as stolen.

The employee told police May allegedly attempted to charge the drill to a contractor's account and was denied the transactions. May allegedly grabbed a display model from a counter, left as the employee had his back turned and drove away from the parking lot in an "evasive manuever so as not to let them see his tag," police said.

May was charged with theft of property and released on $1,000 bond.
