Community is looking for redemption on the turf.

Friday night the Unionville gang hits the road to take on Huntland in its homecoming game. This District 9-A game does not have any implications for a possible playoff berth; the Vikings (0-5, 0-2) need to defeat Cascade and Chapel Hill to find a spot in the postseason.

The Hornets (3-2, 1-0) are coming off a 38-20 loss to ninth-ranked Whitwell last Friday. Both squads have a chance to step up to the challenge and show what they can do. To get their first 'W', it is vital for the Purple and Gold to find the momentum and follow through with it. The Vikes lost to Richland 29-7 last week, but saw some improvement in shifting momentum.

d"If we can allow big plays to happen, then once they happen, (hopefully) our kids will turn that into a situation where we get excited and punch it in," Community coach Johnnie Frost said. "We've had the ball in the red zone (or close to it) numerous times this year and not come away with any points. Once we've been into that area, we've had something, in some form or fashion, happen (to the drive)."

Because of an altercation in last week's game Community has lost six players for Friday, some of which were key players. This week in practice, it has been a central focus to make shifts in offense, defense and special teams.

In the Richland game, the Vikes were able to score their only touchdown with a fresh set of players who came in to fill the empty slots. The scoring drive was one of the best, if not the best, drives the Purple and Gold have seen this season. The combination of the ground and the air was executed with finesse and efficiency. This is a mode Frost and crew looked at in practice this week.

"I was proud of those kids last week," Frost said. "My mom has always said, 'Something good always comes out of something bad, if you look for it to.' It is a situation where the kids that have been put in the spots have been eager to learn. They may not be as efficient in this particular point in time but they are doing a good job. Believe it or not, all the negativity that has been thrown at the team by outside sources has actually thrown the team closer together."

This week in practice, the older kids have stepped up to the plate, and they have helped the younger groups in learning the plays and how to implement those strategies. Frost says he's enjoyed seeing this develop.

"Huntland is a big, physical team," Frost said. "They're gonna come right at you and they're gonna throw their big passes, once they get you drawn in on their run. They're gonna try hard to establish their fullback. We've gotta try to take some things away from them. Pick and choose your poison, so to speak. We've got some different schemes to use defensively.

"If the kids can do it and do it to the best of their ability, then we will have some success."

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30.

All district games have playoff implications, not just the "in-class" games. Who goes to the playoffs is determined by overall District wins and losses. Should a tie happen between two in-class teams with the same district record then the first tie-breaker is head-to-head result. In other words Community could lose to both Cascade and Forrest and get an automatic playoff berth if their District record was better than the other two teams.

Only one 2A team receives an automatic berth from this district while two 1A teams will. Anyone else would have to get in via a wildcard berth.

I know this new playoff system has a lot of people confused. A good friend of mine from Jo Byrns made this post on another website that explains it as well as any I've seen:

"First and second place in the District is an automatic qualifier. If you don't finish first or second in your district, you can then qualify (automatically) by finishing in the top half of your class in your district. In D5, the first and second place teams are both 2A teams and therefore they both automatically qualify. If the 1A team in D5 were to finish first or second then there would only be 1 2A team to qualify. It is a bit confusing; here's how you can qualify for the playoffs:

Automatic Qualifiers:

1. You finish first or second in your district (don't consider class)

2. You finish in the top half of your district in your class

I think Number 2 is confusing people...let's say your team doesn't finish 1 or 2 in the district. That means your team can't qualify based on #1. Then what you do is separate the teams in district based on their class. Rank the teams in your class based on how they finished in the overall district standings. If your team finishes in the top half then they can automatically qualify based on #2. The only thing you have to be aware of with #2 is that "the top half" means only 1 team gets in if there's 3 teams, and 2 teams get in if there's 5 teams.

If you don't automatically qualify then you have to hope you get a wildcard. The wildcards are determined by lumping all the remaining teams in your class that didn't qualify for the playoffs and then ranking them based on overall record. The # of wildcard teams picked depends on how many automatic qualifiers there are. 2A has a total of 24 teams picked for the playoffs; if 18 automatically qualify then only 6 wildcards are picked."

To elaborate further on the top half of your class part. Any District having an odd number of teams in a particular class would have that number rounded down and then halved. Therefore a district containing 3 2a teams (like ours) would round down to 2 and advance only one playoff team automatically provided both 1st and 2nd in the District were not 2a teams. Obviously the possibility of a wildcard berth would still exist.

Only one of the six players has the possibility of sitting out of the game tonight in Huntland.

There was a misunderstanding... Coach yelled defense and a few boys were running on the field to take their positions, including mine. They were not running on the field to get in the fight..Crawford and Mayo were two I saw for sure going in to play Defense.

The coaches watched the tape and determined who was and wasn't involved. So I think it has been taken care of at this time.

On a personal note...three fights in five games..come on boys YOU ARE BETTER THAN THAT....
