Mike Davis of the Shelbyville Police Department will have more responsibilities now that he has been promoted to sergeant.

Chief Austin Swing made the announcement earlier this week, following the results of the latest sergeant exam.

Davis has served Shelbyville since October 1992. He has been a motorcycle officer for three years "and has a very cool and calm demeanor," Swing said.

Interviews for the position were recently conducted in the department "and several good ones applied" but Davis was one of the top ones, the chief said.

Davis will serve on the A Group day shift assisting Maj. Jan Phillips and will be in charge of the shift when Phillips is off.

He will continue current duties as a traffic officer, Swing said, but with more responsibilities.

Davis said he will be assisting other officers on the force "if they need any help with anything or questions on how to handle a situation."

"I'm glad to be of service," Davis said.

Looking good there Mr. Rogers

Congratulations Sergeant Davis. If SHONEYS were still open I would be pleased to treat you to a meal. You are most worthy to be promoted, you have come a long way and we are proud of you.

Congratulations Mike, you deserve it. Goes to show what getting out there and taking care of business doesn't go unrewarded.

I've known Mike since high school and I can't think of anyone who deserves this more. He took the time to help me through a tough situation a few years back. He didn't have to, but he did. Way to go Mike!

Kudo's to Mike. I have known him and his wife for years. I have been on both sides of the fence with him and he seems to try and do the right thing.

I would like for the readers of this column to take 3 minutes of your time and watch the attached video. Then think the next time you want to make a negative comment about a police officer.
