If so, you should set aside some time and get that stuff to the street for Shelbyville's fall clean-up, scheduled for Oct. 19-22.
Trucks will be coming by on your regular garbage pick-up day to haul off just about anything you'd like to dispose of, with the exception of household hazardous waste.
"Tires, furniture, appliances, anything you need to be throwing away, this is the time to do it," said public works director Mark Clanton.
Clanton said when a spring clean-up was announced by the T-G some people got the idea that there might be hidden treasures or salvageable items by the roadway for the taking.
"Lawn mowers and stuff like that, they were gone by the time we got there last time," Clanton said.
The public works director doesn't mind at all if that happens, "because it saves the city a lot of money, then we don't have to dispose of it."
It could be another sign of a bad economy, Clanton said, if people will still hold on to some of the items instead of making room for new ones.
During the spring clean-up in April, the public works department hauled off 121 loads of material, averaging 30 loads per day.
In fact, other public works activities around town, aside from emergencies, are "pretty much shut down" for that week so that the department can devote all their resources to the clean-up, Clanton said.
"The fall is pretty much the big one," he said of the event. Recent rains may also contribute to a larger pick-up since people have been staying inside and not doing yard work and other outdoor activities.
Elderly and disabled citizens may call the public works department at 684-2644 for help moving the items, Clanton said. He encourages letting his department know ahead of time about any needed assistance.
