Shawn Lee Baffo, 21, Woodbury Street, led Officer Jose Garza on a brief chase before surrendering in bushes behind the store, police said. Cory Scott Melton, 21, West End Circle, ignored orders not to run and was arrested by officers Jody Shelton and Jerry Draine across the street a few minutes later, Garza said.
Baffo allegedly ran after a spotlight was shined on the men, who Garza said "appeared to become nervous upon seeing me," as they stood near a convenience store. Melton took off while Baffo was being chased, Garza said.
Officers said Baffo denied possessing drugs. A prescription bottle of Alprazolam (also known as Xanax) tablets containing 74 of 120 prescribed pills and bearing Baffo's name was found nearby, Garza said.
Baffo denied selling the pills after officers asked him why too many were missing based on dosage guidelines and the date the bottle was filled.
Melton told officers Baffo asked if he knew anyone selling or wanting to purchase Xanax. Baffo's cell phone was checked and text messages about meeting him at the store and asking when he would return were found, Garxa said.
Police said Melton "gave a statement in his involvement in selling pills at (the store)" and Baffo "did agree to talk to us but was very uncooperative." Officers seized $66.90 from Baffo, the pill bottle and contents and both men's cell phones.
Baffo was charged with possession of a schedule IV drug and resisting arrest and was held on $7,500 bond, Bedford County Jail records indicate. Melton was charged with resisting arrest and criminal responsibility for conduct of another and is being held on $5,000 bond.
Gun stolen
A pistol was stolen from the console of a locked car at a South Brittain Street home between approximately noon and 9:20 p.m. Saturday, police said.
