Man says he has no pot; police say he did

Tuesday, October 27, 2009

Marijuana was found in the possession of a man who allegedly claimed he had none Saturday, police said.

John Elbert Stanley Jr., 26, Unionville-Deason Road, was being patted down for weapons when Officer Jose Garza said he smelled marijuana.

Stanley denied possessing drugs before Garza found a bag containing 5.94 grams of marijuana and rolling papers, the officer's report said.

Charges of possessing a schedule II drug and possession of drug paraphernalia were filed against Stanley, who posted $2,000 bond at Bedford County Jail.

Theft

A 20-foot ladder was stolen from a North Jefferson Street home between 3 and 7:55 p.m. Saturday, police said.

Fraud

A Shelbyville man told police Monday he received a letter Oct. 1 claiming he had won $60,000 as third place winner of the Reader's Digest Sweepstakes Lottery.

The letter, supposedly from "Specialty Products Co.", contained a check for $2,777 "to cover the cost of taxes and fees associated with claiming his prize," police said.
