Recovered weapon may have been used in shooting

Wednesday, October 28, 2009

A weapon possibly used in last Friday's fatal shooting of Gary LeTron Thomison of Shelbyville was recovered Tuesday in Murfreesboro, while officers continue to seek another man who was allegedly at the scene of the crime.

Two guns, one a .45 caliber handgun, were recovered from the Murfreesboro residence where George Aaron "G" Simpson, 24, was arrested early Tuesday, according to a Murfreesboro Police Department arrest report provided to the Times-Gazette by The Daily News Journal.

The guns have been taken to the TBI crime lab for analysis, Detective Sgt. Brian Crews of the Shelbyville Police Department said today. Investigators say they haven't determined if the .45 caliber gun was the one used in the shooting.

Investigators and an autopsy report indicated the fatal shots were inflicted by .45 caliber bullets.

Simpson was arrested at an apartment complex on Riviera Drive at 2:25 a.m., according to the report.

"A .45 caliber pistol was found on the bed in the front bedroom," the report said. "Under one of the couch cushions a Smith & Wesson 9mm pistol was also recovered."

Simpson surrendered without incident, the MPD said.

Police say they still want to talk to Brandon Holmes of Shelbyville, who has been referred to as a "person of interest" in the case by investigators.

"We are disturbed that he has made no effort to contact us," Crews said.

Investigators said they spent much of Tuesday talking to Simpson, who Crews said was cooperating.

Thomison, 23, died of multiple gunshot wounds fired during an argument in the parking lot of Oak Hill Village II Apartments, Burt Street, police said. Simpson allegedly fled after the shootings and offered to surrender Sunday before his arrest Tuesday, according to Crews.

The victim was to be buried this afternoon.
