Speeding driver endangers trick-or-treaters

Tuesday, November 3, 2009

An unlicensed driver accused of speeding down a residential street filled with trick-or-treaters was arrested after allegedly trying to elude a police officer on foot, reports indicate.

Javier C. Hernandez-Tavera, 20, of Saddlewood Drive, was clocked at 49 mph in a 30 mph zone on Davis Street Saturday night, Officer Waymond Boyd said.

Hernandez-Tavera turned into a driveway on Lindell Boulevard, got out of his truck and ran into a fenced back yard where he was arrested, according to Boyd.

The suspect allegedly told Boyd he had no time to obtain a driver's license.

Several persons confronted Boyd over the arrest before following orders to move on, police said.

Hernandez was charged with reckless driving, no driver's license and evading arrest and posted $4,000 bond, Bedford County Jail records show.

Dangerous 'woods'

Nearby woods may have been "haunted" Saturday night but any ghosts at Shelbyville Recreation Center weren't tough enough to scare away a thief.

Clothing and cash were taken from a workers' room in the Rec Center between 10:15 and 10:45 p.m. by a suspect seen riding away on a bicycle which had also been in the room, Shelbyville police said.

The Haunted Woods festivities were in progress at H.V. Griffin Park during the time in which the room was entered.

Drug charges

*Over 22 grams of marijuana were found in a coat worn by a man who told police he was unaware of its contents early Sunday.

The find followed a traffic stop in which Daniel Devon Chunn, 27, West Highland Street, was stopped on Colloredo Boulevard for driving without lights, police said.

Chunn allegedly initially gave officers a false name and date of birth and failed sobriety tests, the report said.

Officers found 2.92 grams of marijuana in the coat and a corrections officer later discoved 19.62 grams as Chunn was being booked into Bedford County Jail.

Chunn, who tested .084 on an intoximeter at Shelbyville Police Department, told arresting officers the coat belongs to someone else.

He was charged with DUI, criminal impersonation, simple possession and no driver's license/exhibited on demand and is being held without bond.

*Two marijuana cigarettes were confiscated from a car driven by Mistala Leigh Cook, 36, El Bethel Road, after a traffic stop at 9:17 p.m. Saturday, police said.

Cook was clocked at 45 mph in a 30 mph zone on North Main Street, police said.

One of the cigarettes was in Cook's purse and another in the driver's side door and rolling papers were found in her clothing, according to police, and a White Russian mixed drink was near the car's console.

Cook was charged with simple possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, speeding and open container and posted $2,000 bond.

Cars entered

Several auto burglaries occurred over the weekend, four in the Tanner Circle-Fairway Green Drive area off West Lane Street, Shelbyville police said.

Three occurred on Tanner Circle.

*A portable DVD player, digital camera, stroller, clothing, Calsonic-issued welding helmet and Halloween mask were stolen from one unlocked car; an in-dash CD player from another, which was also unlocked; and a radar detector, iPod, checks and bowling ball from a truck on which an unsuccessful attempt was made to open a tool box. The report didn't indicate if the truck was locked.

Two child booster seats were listed as stolen from an unlocked van on Fairway Green Drive.

*A GPS unit, approximately 35 compact discs and DVDs, a digital camera, voice recorder and cell phone were stolen Thursday from one vehicle and a cardboard box from another in the city-owned parking lot on South Main Street across from Shelbyville Power, Water and Sewerage System, police said.

*Prescription drugs were stolen from a purse in a vehicle parked at Bedford Manor Apartments, Barksdale Lane, or Circle O Trailer Park, Railroad Avenue, between 1:30 and 4:30 a.m. Friday. The owner told police she had been at both locations during that time period.

*An in-dash CD/DVD player, amplifier, speakers and a purse were stolen from a locked car at Tyson Foods, West Lane Street, between 12:40 and 1 a.m. Saturday, according to police.

Entry was gained by breaking a window, police said.

Same old names...same old charges....the frequent flyers have flown the coup once again! Now it's time for them to meet with an attorney, cut the best deal they can with the courts and be arrested for the same crap again real soon! That is until the courts of Bedford County grow a backbone.

We had a car broken into Halloween night. It just blew our entire holiday which by the way was my grandson's 1st Halloween!

What is the world coming to for theives to steal strollers and booster seats!!!(our neighbors cars)

This is the 3rd time OUR cars have been hit.

My family doesn't have much but by gosh it's ours and we didn't have to steal it! Hope the police find my son's stuff before my son does and hope to God they are not wearing his clothes.

All you crack heads and meth heads need to try rehab, get a job and find Jesus!

Amen Cindy! I was at a church banquet at Fairlane Church of Christ Saturday night, and my son had question a young man, approximately in his 30's as to what he was doing around my vehicle. Everyone was inside, my son got a phone call which he took outside and notice the guy walking around the vehicle, stoping, bending down and back around it again.

He claimed he was trying to find a football that landed over their. It was dark out, it was about 7:45 and I guess he was playing ball by himself, the houses were a nice distance from where my vehicle was; and I just can't see playing ball in the dark by yourself. It was not broken into, I always lock my doors. But one of my rear tires was extremely low the next morning when it was time to take the kids to school in the freezing weather.
