55 MPH speed limit discussed for 231 inside city limits

Thursday, November 5, 2009

Lowering the speed limit on U.S. 231 North to 55 mph inside the city limits will be considered next Thursday by the Shelbyville City Council.

Mayor Wallace Cartwright said Tuesday he would like to see the speed lowered due to the location of Heritage Medical Center and other establishments on the state highway.

The stretch of highway that would be impacted extends approximately 2.5 miles north of Shelbyville from McDale Lane. The speed limit at Walmart is set at 45 mph, before increasing to 55, then 65 mph shortly thereafter.

A school zone is also located near Victory Baptist Academy.

Cartwright said that he recently consulted with county mayor Eugene Ray and a member of the Tennessee Department of Transportation about the speed limit, which is 65 mph through Deason and into Shelbyville.

This past January, the county commission deadlocked at 9-9 on asking for a speed limit change to 55 mph on Highway 231 from Deason to the city limits. County Mayor Eugene Ray broke the tie in favor of asking for the change, but there was still no required two-thirds majority.

One request was made for a traffic light at the intersection of U.S. 231 and State Route 82 (Webb Road) south of Deason by commissioner Bobby Fox to slow traffic, but that idea never moved forward.

Cartwright also said that since the city limits extend along the right of way of the state highway some 400 feet north of Frank Martin Road, then the council can lower the speed limit.

Currently, the Shelbyville city limits sign on U.S. 231 is located near McDale Lane.

The city is not responsible for the federal highway, but they can set the speed limit, Cartwright explained to the council.

The council will hold its monthly meeting next Thursday at 6 p.m. in the courtroom at the Shelbyville Police Department.

No leave speed limit as is!!!!

I agree a light is needed at Hwy. 231 and Hwy. 82.

They should not be worrying about the speed limit on that section of 231, but should go ahead and raise the 30mph speed limit on Main Street and Madison Street, since apparently only myeslf and maybe 10 other people in this city obey it anyway.

But, but, but look at all the speeding fines we can collect. Ask not what the city can do for you, ask what you can do for the city.

This is so dumb. Can the city of Shelbyville please focus on something important? Leave the speed limit alone!!!

"Currently, the Shelbyville city limits sign on U.S. 231 is located near McDale Lane.

The city is not responsible for the federal highway, but they can set the speed limit, Cartwright explained to the council."

Is he saying that they're trying to change the speed limit outside the city limits? How can the city council do this? Who's going to pay for the traffic studies required to alter the speed limit legally?

Leave the speed limit as is never have figured why they ever lowered it at Deason area. We finally got a good road between Murfreesboro and Shelbyville to make it easier to commute, now we let every business develope and we are going to slow down traffic. Here we go same thing will happen with the new bypass.

-- Posted by johnnyreb on Thu, Nov 5, 2009, at 9:30 AM

Dumb, dumb, dumb idea. That road was widened to facilitate commerce and commute from interstate 24. To throw up a red light, a Dollar General, and even a hospital is a disservice to those who use it daily.

-- Posted by gottago on Thu, Nov 5, 2009, at 9:42 AM

Lets put Cartwright on 231 out of town and raise the speed limit to 100 mph so he will be out of here quicker..this is dumb!

-- Posted by tinytoes on Thu, Nov 5, 2009, at 9:49 AM

I agree, leave the speed limit alone!

But seriously, how many people do the speed limit anyways. I mean, if you try to drive the speed limit of 30, in town, you will get ran over. I think the city should widen the road in the city and build a turning lane. It's horrible trying to get through the traffic.

Here's an idea... How about setting up more jobs for the community out that way before you decide to lower speed limits? And, should you decide to do this, don't import employees from other countries when you have a local workforce here!THIS is the bigger problem you need to concern yourself with instead of some bureaucratic crap like changing speed limits in the middle of Nowhere!

-- Posted by 1ukolsir on Thu, Nov 5, 2009, at 10:24 AM

The speed limit should be raised on North Main from 30 to 40.. and there should also be a turning lane! Look at how well traffic runs through Murfreesboro, and it's between 40 and 45 all through town.

-- Posted by AmRuss on Thu, Nov 5, 2009, at 12:16 PM

They will change it to whatever but, the stretch from Murf. to S'ville is just one big speed trap. I hope I don't find myself on the wrong side of the Law someday.

-- Posted by MyMrMarty on Thu, Nov 5, 2009, at 1:13 PM

i agree to leave the speed limit alone, they need to put another light on north main cause its always hard to get out of places cause only a few do 30 mph

-- Posted by Mom0509 on Thu, Nov 5, 2009, at 1:34 PM

I agree with roadrunner

-- Posted by justthinkingoutloud on Thu, Nov 5, 2009, at 2:05 PM

i agree a light should be at 231 /82... but Why bother with speed limits at all... i have people flying by me in the 30 mph on madison and main... ride my bumper...i get cut off and flipped off .... its nuts and frustrating and i NEVER see it enforced. they put those machines out there to see how fast people are going?? why??? its out there for the 100th time and NOTHING changes. but i am doing what the speed says i should, because i will be the first one to get stopped...

-- Posted by angelseverywhere on Thu, Nov 5, 2009, at 2:11 PM

Leave the speed limit alone and don't add a red light at 82 & 231. Didn't this come up recently? Instead of adding another red light perhaps the city can give free basic & defensive driving courses to the folks that cannot figure out how to negotiate an intersection....look left , look right, if nothing is coming or at a far enough distance, then it is safe to pull out. It seems everytime I come to that intersection, that some drivers seem to be sitting at the stop sign waiting for the vehicles starting out in Shelbyville or Murfreesboro to all of a sudden appear and run them over. If a person has a problem driving for reasons such as poor eyesight or whatever reason, then that person should be removed from behind the wheel.

Furthermore, if someone is afraid to drive on a 4 lane highway, such as 231 North, without a red light or stop sign every 500 feet and at 65 mph, then may I suggest that you take Midland Dirt Road or some alternate route, where they have plenty of stop signs and a speed limit of 45 mph and leave the highway alone.

JMHO,

William

You have got to be kidding! Traffic does NOT move well through Murfreesboro, especially on 231. Thanks to the belief that every traffic issue should be addressed by putting up a red light, South Church is a nightmare from Barfield/ Crescent Rd to the Interstate.

-- Posted by gottago on Thu, Nov 5, 2009, at 3:53 PM

gottago---You are exactly right! I travel through that area every day to/from work and it takes me as long to get through there as it does to get from Shelbyville to Murfreesboro.

-- Posted by k_collins39 on Thu, Nov 5, 2009, at 4:17 PM

just another way of trying to get more money for the city. reduce speed and setting speed traps. the hospital should not be so far out anyways.

That Indians Hills/Indian Park/Savannah Ridge corridor is so difficult to get in and out of that great some properties are not selling even with reduced price tags. I used to live in that are and wouldn't even consider trying it again.

Here is a clue: the City Council has much bigger fish to fry.

Mayor Cartwright is like everybody else in office they do not lisen to the people that put him in office. Mayor Cartwright need to unstanded

the law. City have NO CONTROL oustside there city limit. The city POLICE cannot even enforce the speed limit inside the city limit. They are NEVER around. Cars and truck travel 40-50mph in the 30mph zone.

Leave Hwy 231 alone.

-- Posted by fatboy69 on Fri, Nov 6, 2009, at 9:53 AM

County Mayor Eugene Ray vote on a tie breaker in favor on lower the speed limit on Hwy 231. He need to be more concern about schools that are with failing grade and how to run the county better. Leave Hwy 231 speed alone.

If County Mayor Ray and Mayor Cartwright does not want to lisen to the people. Then the people need to VOTE BOTH of THEM OUT of OFFICE. This way they can not do as they please.

Traffic is an issue in this town, changing the speed limit is not the answer, enforcing the already speed limits would help. If people went 30 mph , maybe people could get out of Krogers, subway, taco bell etc. easier. But right now its an absolute Nightmare... Shelbyville is falling apart.... Meth labs.... failing schools...... no jobs.... all the vacant property and foreclosers...and they are paying all the officials to sit around and talk about it....

-- Posted by angelseverywhere on Fri, Nov 6, 2009, at 12:42 PM

maybe Al and LeRoy are going to open a new business out there and need people to slow down so they can see it. Or maybe Al thinks people are trying to leave town too fast. either way I am sure it was their idea

I love those speed limit machines. I try to see how high I can get the number to go. Got it up to 68 mph on Fairfield Pike. That was my all time best!

-- Posted by Double Exposure on Fri, Nov 6, 2009, at 9:08 PM

balloonboy If you would ask Al and Leeroy are not the person wanting this it is the good mayor Ceartwright that wants this, please learn to read before running your mouth.

With all the corruption going on in shelbyville, ole wallace hasn't come out of his office since being elected. He finally comes out and all he can do is suggest changing the speed limit. If he had an illegal alien mopping his floor, he'd probably be on another planet. While gangsters are screwing up the housing market, he's asleep with his feet on his desk. While bredesen is moving somalians in to work at tysons and tysons corporate gurus are trying to sell their corrupt products, he's looking at trees being planet on the square. If this is the best he can do, please, please, please go back to sleep and don't come out again.

amen, amen

That is awesome! NOT that I am condoning speeding mind you, but that is too funny!

I agree...leave the speed limit alone...unfortunately you have A LOT of elderly people traveling (IN THE FAST/LEFT LANE) going too/from the hospital and that slows/clogs the highway up also. They are afraid to travel in the right lane for fear they may not be able to get over...or just don't care, like a lot of people! There are A LOT of people that need a driving course and it should cost more than a box of cracker jacks to get a license. And govt officials are going to do what they want, period. The only way to respond is to VOTE 'EM OUT!

As to the Deason speed limit, someone responded a while ago on another article about the speed limit and said it was 55mph due to the "curbs" in Deason. Didn't believe it until I drove through there one day and saw them...then wondered who the Dumb___ was that put CURBS on a highway?!

Also heard about a website on a local radio station the other day...leftlanedrivers.org ...one of those "why didn't I think about that"...
