The 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment of the Tennessee National Guard, which includes the guard troops based in Shelbyville and Lewisburg, is preparing to return to Camp Shelby, Miss., on the first leg of its scheduled deployment to Iraq in February.
The unit just completed three weeks of annual training at Camp Shelby and will return there on or about Dec. 5. to begin mobilization training. The unit will train for two months at Camp Shelby before its scheduled deployment.
More than 3,300 soldiers from Kingsport in East Tennessee to Henderson in West Tennessee make up the 278th.
"Further updates on the mobilization and deployment will be provided as available," according to a state news release.
Guard members from Shelbyville and Lewisburg were scheduled to enjoy some family time this weekend at a special event to be held at the armory on U.S. 231 south of Shelbyville, according to a member of the Family Readiness Group.

Let us hope that once they get there, our government won't desert them. The great swamp of corruption in DC is getting deeper, and the miltary is always first to suffer when Democrats assume power, and boy do they love power. Did not SanFran Nan promise to drain that sucker. Oh well political promises come and go but generally they are alway empty promises and lies.
Wish this worked like FB. I really LIKE what cherokee2 said. God speed to the 278th!!!!
I love how stories about our hometown troops are always in the middle of the newspaper. I also love the fact that our newspaper knows when they are going to be in Iraq before our soldiers know.
God bless those guys...sounds like they won't be home for Christmas this year, but hopefully that won't be the case next year. I agree cherokee2, let us pray that our government does not forsake our troops. We must all stay vocal in our support for our men and women in uniform!

May the Holy Ones shield our troops while spewing mayhem and death on those who oppose them.
Is it not refreshing to see Resident Obama's response to the tragedy at Fort Hood Texas. He actually mangaged to give a 2 minute condolences statement at the end of an already prepared speech which included a shoutout to his bud's. And we will not see him disparage the scum that killed these fine soldiers either. After all he has already publically stated that in any altercation between muslims and Americans, he will side with the muslim. Does this not endear him to all of us who (kak) know and love (ptooey) him. Actually he does not even deserve the honor of cleaning the soldiers boots. I sure don't envy the men who protect his life. Their task is a thankless one.
God be with all the men & women protecting our rights and hopes for a future for ourselves and our children. May God wrap you in his arms every night until you are safely home. Have a heart that never hardens, a temper that never tires, a touch that never hurts. - Charles Dickens
