Local residents to attend Nashville 'tea party'

Friday, November 6, 2009

A number of Bedford County residents are planning to travel to Nashville Saturday to join others from across Tennessee to participate in what organizers are calling "the first ever statewide tea-party."

The rally is scheduled to occur at Legislative Plaza from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday, a date that organizers hold significant because it marks approximately one year from the 2010 Congressional elections.

As a result, the organizers are calling it a "One Year Notice" to Congress and they are inviting citizens to sign pink slips to send to their representatives, warning "if Congress continues to ignore the will of the people and Constitution they'll be fired."

One of the local organizers of the event, Roger Eyman, told the T-G that he has contacted about 150 people about attending and that a car pool to the Nashville event will be gathering Saturday in the parking lot of Peoples Bank at 1122 N. Main St. at 9:30 a.m..

Tea parties are nothing new to Bedford County. A group of about 100 people gathered on April 15 on the Shelbyville public square, and others gathered in 20 other counties, as well as about 10,000 that attended the Nashville rally that day.

Eyman said his wife Donna organized the April event and a similar event on July 4 that Roger put together attracted about 150 people. He said all the organizing was done by both e-mail and phone.

The first tea parties were in response to Congressional spending and deficits, the bailouts of banks and auto companies and legislation like the stimulus bill, but organizers say that the event this weekend will likely be dominated by the current health care debate.

"As of November 7, the elections will be only one year away and we are telling them, listen to the people or we are going to throw you out of office," a statement on the organizer's website says.

"Too often, we Americans live in fear of our elected officials. It's time for them to fear us."

Organizers of the movement have described it as "very decentralized," with groups forming and acting independently of one another, but for Saturday's rally, Tea Party groups from Tennessee's major regions have partnered for the event.

Speakers will include conservative radio personalities from the Nashville and Knoxville areas, Ben Cunningham from Tennessee Tax Revolt and others.

Those wanting to participate in Saturday's tea party can find more information at oneyearnotice.com or they can call the Eymans at 684-1764 or 575-8805.

I play no favorites nor do I take prisoners. The (p)resident speaks not for me. My government speaks not for me. Read my lips, hear my words, see my emotion. Observe Old Glory flying over my home daily, my bible in prominent display in my den. If you won't learn our language, go home. If you wont support our law, go home. If you want others to support you in a style, (thanks to a too generous government) that you should not have been been afforded, leave this land, I'll help you pack. Third generation welfare is not an option. If you object to working, then I object to you. If you won't respect our religion, go home. Also, if you cannot believe in a just God, a free land with respect and fairness for everyone, depart from this great country. You are not deserving of it. And Washington, (Republican, Democrats or Independents of all religions and colors) you have been weighed in the balance and found wanting. You are fired. Clean out your desks and crawl back to where ever you oozed from.

Well-said Cherokee2.

I stand behind your comments and your opinion.

There are many of us that feel the same way.

A movement is afoot.

Now is the time to attempt to take back our federal government. Our federal government has become tyrannical and needs to be replaced with those that appreciate and respect the will of the American people.

We are seeing at this time, in my opinion, a government that does not represent the people.

We are seeing a tyrannical government that does not afford the common man representation.

In essence we are witnessing a government that no longer represents the people of the United States of America.

There was a time in the distant past when our country was being founded that others felt this same sense of oppression.

This moment in time was what caused the birth of our country and our freedom from the British Empire.

Now we as Americans face a similar situation, except in this case it comes from within.

Time to wake up People, time to make a difference.

You folks who think this is a Democrat or Republican issue are slitting your own economic throats. This is class warfare. The wealthy are shipping jobs to places where labor is dirt cheap, environmental standards are almost non-existent, and principles like freedom are payed lip service to. All in an effort to marginally increase profits.

The Democrats and Republicans are both signing trade deals and giving incentives for American jobs to vanish to 3rd world countries. While you all sit here and fight with your fellow working man, the ones at the top are sheltered from any blame because they have successfully divided and conquered the working class. You people are so caught up in ideological partisan bickering that you can't see the real threat to your futures right in front of you.

Maybe instead of standing up to your fellow American over issues that ultimately don't effect you personally or economically, like gay marriage and the war on drugs, abortion, and twisted interpretations of the word "socialism"; you might actually stand up to corrupt politicians and multinational corporations that are selling your futures for pennies on the dollar. All these other issues are window dressing compared to the economic issues at hand.

Some of you people don't seem to understand that America will never fully recover from this depression. These jobs won't come back. This isn't a normal business cycle now that the labor market is officially global in scale. There are winning countries and losing countries. Better do something NOW to hold onto the jobs that are still clinging to this country, your apathy is destroying your future.

deathtongue, I see no apathy in the tea party movement.

My wife and I just got back from Washington DC. Ten's of thousands were there on Thursday for a rally to remind lawmakers that the overwhelming majority of Americans do not want their version of health care reform.

After the rally, thousands lined up outside of the three congressional office buildings in order to again encourage our representatives to not support the health takeover.

The rally and the meetings were positive and encouraging and as far as effective? Nancy did not have the votes on Friday like originally planed, nor did she have them today.

People are not sitting by letting things happen. The fact that the health care did not pass in July is proof that Washington is listening.

On Thursday, one of the speakers said that politics is won by those present. I think I'm going to shut down my computer now and go have a cup of tea.

deathtongue,

Well said and I totally 100% agree. Glad you see the larger picture.

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.

You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift. You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down. You cannot further the brotherhood on man by inciting class hatred. You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence. You cannot help people permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves.
