Eaglette, Viqueens run at state

Shelbyville Central's Angel Carrillo earned some valuable experience by racing in the Class AAA state cross country meet at Percy Warner Park's Steeplechase course last weekend.

The freshman finished the 5K event in 23 minutes, 33 seconds, which was good enough to place 126th out of 188 runners.

She qualified for state by placing fourth at the Region 4-AAA race on Oct. 29.

Community competes: The Viqueen cross country team participated in the Class A/AA portion of Saturday's state meet.

Michaela Jones was the highest finisher for the team with a 53rd place (23:31) showing. This is the highest finish for a Community runner in school history. She broke her own mark of 59th from last year.

Erica Hoffman finished in 130th place (27:21), Kali Sitz in 140th (28:30) and Courtney Vassar in 163rd (31:37).

Allyse Reece also ran for the Viqueens but could not finish because she became ill during the race.

"I am really proud of this group of young ladies," Community coach Tony Garrette said. "We are losing three seniors that have been an integral part of the success of this program. Erica Hoffman, Courtney Vassar and Kristen Simmons have all accomplished a great deal for this program and have left big shoes to follow."

The had 175 runners from all over the state. The individual champion was Red Bank's Claire Turner (19:46).
