A drunken driver being pursued by police walked away with relatively minor injuries after crashing his car near Wartrace late Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

James Curtis Riley, 26, of Fairoak Street lost control of his Nissan Maxima while crossing the one-lane bridge on Bugscuffle Road, Wartrace Police Chief Lee Groce said. The car overturned down an embankment and landed on nearby railroad tracks.

Groce said he spotted Riley, who had outrun an earlier pursuit, headed toward Wartrace where a sheriff's deputy was waiting with orders to block the road if necessary.

Riley had initially run after being asked to show his driver's license while parked at the Duck River access point near Mullins Mill Bridge off U.S. 41-A East near Shelbyville, Deputy Todd Hammonds of the Bedford County Sheriff's Department said.

Hammonds said he was checking the area because of allegations of drug use and sales in the area.

Riley drove at speeds of up to 95 mph on U.S. 41-A East and Normandy Road before temporarily outrunning officers.

Authorities said Riley was taken to Heritage Medical Center and has since been released.

Charges of DUI, reckless endangerment, evading arrest, possession of a schedule II drug, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving on a revoked/suspended license, tampering with or fabricating evidence and violation of the implied consent law were filed against Riley, who was being held on $28,500 bond Friday at Bedford County Jail.

Theft

Two tool boxes were stolen from the bed of a truck at Legends, North Main Street, between 8:30 and 8:50 p.m. Thursday, police said.

The owner estimated his losses at $2,800, the report said.
