A resident said a man dressed in black was leaving his garage when he arrived home at 7:45 p.m.
The intruder appeared alarmed and surprised when he saw the resident and was last seen running through the back yard and into a field, police were told.
No signs of anyone entering the living area of the home were found by police. The garage door, which had been closed when the residents left, was open when they returned, according to police.
Residents of far southern Shelbyville have been on alert after the living area of another home was entered after midnight Friday morning. The incident Sunday may not be connected, detectives said.
