Suspect wrecks while fleeing victim's husband

Wednesday, December 2, 2009
A traffic accident led to a Shelbyville man being charged with sexual battery Sunday, city police said.

Police found an abandoned, wrecked car belonging to Leonel Bautista Hernandez, 24, Shadow Drive, at the intersection of Dunnaway and South Brittain streets.

Hernandez admitted he wrecked while fleeing from a friend's home after inappropriately touching his sleeping wife, police said.

The ex-friend confirmed he chased Hernandez from the home and smashed his car's windshield.

Hernandez was also charged with leaving the scene of an accident and driving without a license. He posted $6,250 bond at Bedford County Jail.

False imprisonment

A McMinnville man was charged with false imprisonment Friday after allegedly picking up an ex-girlfriend to take her to a store, then saying he loved her and was going to take her to his residence.

The ex-girlfriend told police Eloy Alverez-Serna, 21, told her when they reached the store he claimed he was going to take her to a restaurant, but passed several and drove toward Tullahoma. She texted her sister to call police then told Alverez-Serna what she'd done, officers said.

Alverez-Serna allegedly reached Tullahoma before taking the woman back to her home, where her sister, mother and a police officer were waiting.

An order of protection issued in May was served on Alverez-Serna at the scene, police said.

Alverez-Serna posted $5,000 bond at Bedford County Jail.

Assault charges

Two men were charged with aggravated assault after allegedly attacking another man early Thanksgiving morning at Pop-A-Top, Madison Street.

The victim, who police described as "covered in blood" from two cuts on the back of his head, told police Randy Dale Maddox Jr., 25, Fairground Heights, and James Avery Stewart, 38, Cartwright Road, attacked him.

Maddox and Stewart allegedly confronted the victim after he noticed a woman accompanying them had a black eye and asked who had hit her. She had told the victim her attacker was not the two accused men, police said.

Another customer told police she witnessed Maddox hitting the victim with a glass jar and Stewart striking him with a fire extinguisher.

The victim told police he left the bar as Maddox followed, asking him twice if he wanted to die.

Maddox and Stewart were arrested moments later after Officer Darrell Birdsong stopped their vehicle due to a malfunctioning light. Maddox allegedly admitted striking the victim. Stewart denied involvement and became "belligerent," police said.

The accused each posted $7,500 bond, officials said.

Thefts, burglaries

More than $400 worth of fishing equipment was stolen from a Myers Street home between Thursday and Friday mornings, police said.

Ten rod and reel combos had been stored under a carport, the report said.

Other incidents reported to Shelbyville police:

An employee said $110 was missing. The door to the room may have accidentally been left open, police were told.

Decorations knifed

One or more individuals who apparently haven't caught the Christmas spirit took a knife to Santa Claus and Winnie the Pooh on Saturday night.

An Amos Smith Drive resident told police he saw a red Chevrolet four-door truck occupied by four men, including one who was pointing at the home's suddenly-deflated motorized decorations.

The victim said the decorations have been damaged in the past.
