Decision near on planning/codes hire

Wednesday, December 16, 2009
City officials could make their decision by Friday who will be heading up the city's planning and codes department.

Interviews for the position were completed Monday morning and while the names of those who have applied have not been released, more than half of the applicants have local ties.

The interviews began Friday with city recorder Betty Lamb and public works director Mark Clanton, who has been overseeing the day to day functions of the department.

"We've got some very qualified people (that have applied) so it's going to take some time," to make a decision, which she said could come by the end of the week after she checks their references.

Lamb said that all six of the applicants would "all bring their own ideas to the table. They are all very qualified."

Three of the applicants for the job live in Shelbyville, while one is originally from Bedford County and intends to move back. The other two that are applying for the position are from Coffee County and Nashville, Lamb explained.

Kip Green, who had previously held the codes and planning job, resigned in September.

Former city manager Ed Craig was supposed to take over Green's duties following his departure, however, the city manager's forced resignation in October left the planning and codes department without direction.
