Sweet treat adds to the holiday, alcohol or not

Sunday, December 20, 2009
Every family has special holiday traditions. Each Christmas, my mother's side of the family gathers on Christmas Day for a full day of festivities. Of course, everything is surrounded by food. Many dishes are family favorites that we all look forward to each year while each year new dishes bring freshness to the table.

One of the staples at my family's Christmas dinner is my grandfather's eggnog. From as far back as I can remember I have looked forward to indulging in this sweet treat each Christmas night. When I became old enough to drink, it became even more of a treat as my grandfather also provided ingredients to go with his eggnog for those who wished to enjoy an adult beverage.

I love my grandfather's eggnog because it is not nearly as sweet, thick and rich as what you'll find in the store, which I find overbearing.

I won't be home for Christmas this year, but I was sure to call my grandfather for his recipe. I was surprised to see how simple the recipe is ... Now I know for sure that I'll be making my own batch, minus the alcohol, this Christmas. I should note as a disclaimer here that eggnog contains raw eggs. Consuming raw eggs may pose potential health risks.

Charlie's eggnog

2 quarts whole milk

8 eggs

3/4 cups sugar

1 tsp. vanilla

1 pint heavy cream

nutmeg and cinnamon to taste

Beat eggs separately. Then, add remaining ingredients and beat until well-blended.

Serve over ice and add a dash of cinnamon and/or nutmeg to top.

To spike, add one shot of either spiced rum, whiskey, or amaretto to your eight ounce serving of eggnog.
