Church, gym targets in teens' vandalism spree

Tuesday, January 5, 2010
Three teenage boys left a trail of theft and vandalism from Elm to Madison streets Friday night and Saturday morning, targeting a church, gym and several businesses, Shelbyville police said.

The boys surrendered to police after a parent found unfamiliar items inside a building behind his Deery Street home and began asking questions. Baseballs, bats, a handheld public address system and walkie-talkies were among items recovered by police.

The parents ordered their children to admit their actions; the boys did so and were charged with burglary, Officer Bruce Davis said.

Police reports indicate:

* An estimated $2,000 damage occurred at the old Harris Middle School, Elm Street.

Three toilets were smashed along with several ceiling fixtures and glass in interior doors.

Bedford County Emergency Management Agency equipment is stored inside the building, police said.

* A trophy case was broken and two trophies inside Central Memorial Gym were smashed, a cash register was broken and $8 taken, and contents of nine fire extinguishers were sprayed throughout the building, located on Elm Street next door to the school.

The fire alarm was pulled and a security alarm was sounding when a soccer coach arrived at the gym to conduct a practice session, police said.

A Parks and Recreation Department security guard said the damage had not yet occurred when he checked the gym at 7:23 a.m.

* A microwave oven and walkie-talkies were stolen from the concession stand and a storage building at the baseball field behind First Christian Church, Madison Street. "Scooby Crazy" was painted inside and outside both buildings and on the side of the church's bus.

A window was smashed to enter the concession stand.

* An officer checked the former Fix-It Shop building, Madison Street, after the boys admitted their actions. Tools were stolen and "West Side Crzy Gang" and "CG" were painted inside and outside the building.

* The drive-through window at Arby's, Madison Street, was intact, but broken with a "small object," police said.

* "CG," "WS" and "P.J. 16.10" were painted on three exterior walls at Artistic Treasures, Madison Street.

Theft

A resident who was asked to leave The Next Step Home residence in Shelbyville left with another resident's gift card, bottle of perfume and several items of clothing, police said.

Repeated phone calls to the suspect have gone unanswered, according to police.

The Next Step Home is a "transitional residence" for individuals who have recently been released from rehabilitation or incarceration.

DUI charge

An allegedly intoxicated driver was arrested after backing into and damaging a unit at a Locust Street apartment unit Friday, according to police.

Joe Antoine Cannon, 28, South Cannon Boulevard, was arrested moments later at his residence and admitted consuming several drinks, records indicate.

Cannon's license was revoked for previous traffic offenses and he was unable to show proof of vehicle insurance, police said.

He was charged with second offense DUI, leaving the scene of an accident and violations of the implied consent (for refusing a breath test) and financial responsibility laws, jail records indicate, and posted $7,000 bond.
