Vandals strike church, day care center

Wednesday, January 20, 2010
Vandals have struck a church and day care center in Shelbyville since Friday, and both incidents are strikingly similar to several committed over New Year's weekend.

A witness saw smoke billowing from the top of a bus at Gateway Church, Madison Street, Monday afternoon and two boys ran away as he approached, Shelbyville police said.

Gauze from a first aid kit on the bus was used to ignite the fire, Officer Justin Smith said.

"The bus was ransacked, several windows were shattered and vulgar and gang related graffiti and other nonsensical writings were located on the roof of the bus, on numerous seats and on several windows," according to Smith.

The boys were described as a "chubby white male and a thin Hispanic male," and both appeared to be in their early teens, Smith said.

One of the boys rode a black bicycle with a blue rear fender and the other a razor-style scooter, Smith was told.

This is the second church bus damaged by vandals this month. Similar damage was done to a bus at First Christian Church, Madison Street, which is approximately two miles west of Gateway Church.

* A "huge mess" was left at Building Blocks of A B & D, Alton Avenue, overnight Saturday, a report by Officer Mitchell Warren said.

A fire extinguisher was sprayed throughout the building, as one was at Central Memorial Gym in the same general area of Shelbyville on the morning of Jan. 2, and toys and other items were scattered throughout the facility, Warren said.

Canned foods, first aid kits, a DVD player and boom box were stolen, police said.

A wooden fence in the back yard and window in a door were broken to gain entry to the property and building, the report said.

Burglaries

Two men entered a Tillett's Trailer Park home Friday and left with a computer and necklace, police said.

A witness told police the men knocked on the front door for several minutes before entering. The men left several minutes carrying a black bag which was later determined to be holding the Toshiba laptop computer and the necklace, police were told.

The residents told police both items had been in a bedroom.

* Another Toshiba laptop computer, valued at approximately $2,500, was stolen from a car at an Eagle Boulevard home in late December, police were told Friday.

* A wallet containing $440 was stolen from a Deery Street home about 3 p.m. Feb. 13, police were told Friday.

* A Rossi 2-inch barrel .357 Magnum revolver was stolen from a Unionville-Deason Road home between Jan. 11-15, a report filed by Cpl. Kent Jacobs of the Bedford County Sheriff's Department said.

A Daisy Red Ryder bb gun was stolen from the home earlier, the owner said.
