DUI suspect said she couldn't drive

Wednesday, February 3, 2010
Bonnie Loretta Keys told Shelbyville police she didn't know how to drive.

But she tried anyway Monday despite being drunk, police said, resulting in an injured 5-year-old daughter and a wrecked truck.

Keys, 43, of Tate Avenue was arrested after the accident, which police said occurred in a field across the street from her home. Her daughter, Treasure Johnson, was crying and had a "small bump on her cheekbone," Officer Sam Jacobs' report said. The girl was checked by Bedford County Emergency Medical Service personnel but didn't require hospital treatment, Jacobs said.

"She had gotten inside the truck with her daughter and couldn't get the truck in the driveway," Jacobs said of Keys. "She stated she did not have a driver's license nor did she know how to drive. She stated the vehicle went across the road and slammed into a tree."

The truck was backed into a tree approximately 60 feet from the street, Jacobs said.

Keys, who told Jacobs she had consumed "several beers," allegedly registered 0.202 on an Intoximeter. She was charged with DUI and driving without a license and posted $1,500 bond at Bedford County Jail.

Road rage

An angry driver spat on another driver during a confrontation Monday on North Main Street, police said.

The victim told police he was attempting to cross oncoming traffic lanes to enter a parking lot and thought the offender had stopped to allow him through. The other driver began moving, leading to the confrontation in which the offender got out of his vehicle and spat on the victim before driving away, police were told.

Burglary

An antique wash tub, chest of drawers and a window were stolen from an East Depot Street home Tuesday, police were told.
