Feet run toward tourney

Saturday, February 13, 2010
With a core group of starters, which consists of four seniors, and the will to compete, the Webb Feet have set a solid foundation going into the Division II-A East/Middle Region tournament.

The Feet (18-6) are seeded fourth with their only league losses coming to University School of Nashville and Webb-Knoxville. This allows the squad a first-round bye, so the Feet advance to Monday's quarterfinals where they will host the Franklin Road Academy/Riverside Christian winner.

The Bell Buckle crew was runner-up last year to USN in a six-team region. This season the East/Middle region has 12 teams.

Webb's season ended last February in a sectional contest when Lausanne Collegiate bused into town from Memphis and handed the Feet a 20-point loss.

"This is just a great bunch of guys and I am really fortunate to work with them," Webb coach Jeff Mitchell said. "I am really proud of them. They've won a lot of games, probably the most of a four-year group, I would think, here at Webb. I am excited for them. Our whole thing is that we want to get to that final four in the region."

Webb has consistently improved and found a graceful rhythm, combined with speed and momentum, that has the ability to fluster and confuse its opponent.

Luke Baum has stepped up on the offensive end even more this season and has joined Miles Davis and Hunter Foutch in a scoring attack that places all three in double digits most games. Baum's ability to work the perimeter and post up opponents plays an important part in the their offensive strike. Foutch continues to lead the team in scoring and adds leadership through hard work on both sides of the court.

Davis is the powerhouse behind the squad and sometimes dazzles the crowd with a dunk. His work underneath has allowed the Feet an advantage over their opponents around the paint. Although Davis does the job of a true power forward, he has worked on his shot behind the arc significantly and it can become a threat.

Logan Burchett has proven to be an essential facet to the team's defensive plan. When he is not finding room for a shot from the perimeter, he is pushing the nerves his opponents.

Bil Carter's length comes in handy when Mitchell goes to a zone defense, and he's proven to be a reliable finisher around the basket on offense. His tipping passes by the opponent sometimes leads to transition buckets.

"If we play that hard and compete that hard, then we have a chance to win just about against anybody," Mitchell said. "It depends on what team shows up. We have been pretty consistent. We are experienced. These guys have been to a lot of games together. I think that's big for us. There are so many good teams and you've got to be ready for all of them."
