Candidates qualify for county primary, general elections

Friday, February 19, 2010

Noon Thursday was the deadline for local candidates to qualify for the May 4, 2010, party primary elections, and for independent candidates to qualify for the August general election.

There will be competitive races in the Democratic primary for county mayor, sheriff, circuit court clerk and trustee. Incumbent Trustee Peggy Bush is not seeking re-election. Incumbent County Clerk Kathy Prater and Register of Deeds Johnny Reed, barring a write-in candidacy, are guaranteed re-election, being the only candidates who filed to run for their positions.

Because no candidates filed to run in the Republican primary for county-wide offices, the winners of the May Democratic primary will be unopposed on the August general election ballot.

One candidate, Rodney Guinn, chose to run in the Republican primary for a Fourth District county commission seat, the first time in recent memory that anyone has run in either party's primary for county commission. County commission candidates have generally run as independents regardless of their personal party affiliation.

Four of the nine county commission districts have competitive races; in the other five districts, the incumbents are un-challenged.

Some school board and road board seats will also be up for election in August, but because there is no party primary those candidates have until noon April 1 to file qualifying papers. Candidates in the Bell Buckle city election also have until noon April 1 to file.

The Shelbyville, Normandy and Wartrace city elections will take place in November.
