Adversity is nothing new for Shelbyville Central this season.

With a pair of starters suspended for the rest of the season and another, Seth Jarrell, home with an apparent stomach virus, the undermanned Golden Eagles avoided elimination from the District 8-AAA tournament with a 49-47 win over visiting Lincoln County on Friday night.

The win put Shelbyville in the semifinals against Lawrence County on Saturday night and gave them an automatic berth in the Region 4-AAA tournament.

"We really had a great practice on Thursday and Seth Jarrell was going to play a major role in our game plan. We found out that he wasn't going to be here for this game and had to change the way we were going to play," Eagle coach Kevin Thomas said. "I'm very proud of how this team adjusted in such a short notice and with heart, effort and desire to win that they had."

Junior Bobby Wilson was a force inside the paint while a pair of young and talented sophomores, Cameron Gordon and Christian Haile, made the most of their opportunity to join the starting lineup.

Wilson connected on 10-of-16 shots and added 4-of-5 free throws to score a game-high 24 points. Gordon finished with 14 points, six rebounds and four steals.

Gordon's putback off an offensive rebound with 51 seconds left to play tied the game at 47-47, then his steal and basket with 2 seconds left was the game winner.

Haile finished with seven points, including six unanswered at the end of the first half and start of the third quarter.

"Cameron's steal and conversion was a tremendous play for us," Thomas said. "I told him at halftime that he was the quickest kid out there and he had to make them think they were open then break on the ball. He and Christian Haile really stepped it up for us and played well as sophomores and Bobby Wilson and Nathan Jefferies really showed a lot of leadership for us."

With the game knotted at 10-10 at the end of the first quarter, Shelbyville outscored their opponent 12-8 in the second stanza to hold a 22-18 advantage at the break.

The Eagles led 40-28 late in the third quarter before Luke Washburn connected on a 3-pointer for the Falcons to cut the lead to 40-31 going into the fourth quarter.

Lincoln County made a run in the final eight minutes with Tre Henderson scoring 12 of his 22 points.

Mico McDonald's back-to-back baskets gave the Falcons a 47-45 lead with 1:25 left on the clock before Gordon came to the rescue for the Eagles.

Shelbyville held a huge 32-18 edge on the boards, including 19 offensive rebounds. Jefferies led the way with eight while Wilson hauled in seven.
