Five youths charged in vandalism spree

Wednesday, February 24, 2010
Five teenagers who allegedly blazed a trail of vandalism through central Shelbyville since January -- including some who were previously charged -- were arrested Monday, police say.

"We hope this puts an end to it for a little while," Detective Sgt. Brian Crews said.

"Several of them are the same ones involved in the earlier incidents," Crews said. "Three were supposed to be on house arrest. Obviously the parents aren't doing what they were supposed to do."

The teenagers, ranging in age from 12 to 15, are now in juvenile detention, Crews said.

Several of the youths won't be on house arrest anymore, the detective said. One, in court Monday due to a prior offense, was "sent off" and Crews said others are expected to be sent to detention centers.

Lighthouse Church of God, outbuildings and buses at First Christian Church and Gateway Church, a day care center, Central Memorial Gym and the old Harris Middle School were extensively vandalized with items stolen and several other buildings were "gang tagged." police reports indicate.

Crews said the youths were not specifically damaging churches.

"They mainly targeted abandoned buildings and unoccupied businesses...anything that had four walls," Crews said. "Most of the stolen items were not recovered."
