Joyce Tune has announced her candidacy for re-election to a Seventh District seat on Bedford County Board of Commissioners in the Aug. 5 general election.

Tune, a lifelong resident of Bedford County, is the widow of George Tune, who held the same county commission seat prior to his death. She operated Tune's Union 76 / U-Haul / Greyhound for 28 years and has worked for Musgrave Pencil Company for the past 19 years.

She serves on the county commission's law enforcement and workhouse committee and various study committees and served on the boards of the former Bedford County Medical Center and the Child Development Center. She is a member of Edgemont Baptist Church.

Tune has performed wedding services for more than 1,000 couples since becoming a county commissioner.

Tune has five children, two stepchildren, 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

"I'd like to see our school system as good as it possibly can be," she said. "I'd like to see health care for the elderly looked into and improved as much as possible."

She described herself as the type of legislator who works in the background to support beneficial projects.
