No money found on purse snatching suspect

Thursday, March 11, 2010
No suspicious money was found nor charges filed against a woman accused of stealing a purse and money Tuesday at the state driver's license testing center on Railroad Avenue, Shelbyville police said.

The purse was left on a chair while its owner took a driver's license test, a report filed by Officer Bruce Davis said. The victim said she noticed the purse was gone and saw a woman carrying several items into a restroom. She confronted the woman after finding her purse, with $200 missing, inside a trash can within the restroom.

The other woman left, followed by the victim who described the suspect's vehicle and location to police by cell phone.

Davis stopped the woman, who gave permission for her vehicle to be searched, the report said.

Drug, alcohol charges

Drug and alcohol charges were filed against the driver of a vehicle involved in a traffic stop Tuesday night on Sharpie Way, according to police.

Herman Austin Caldwell III, 35, Davis Street, told officers he had placed marijuana into the purse of a passenger, who allegedly said during a vehicle search she was unaware of its presence. The passenger was not charged, Officer David Curley's report said.

Caldwell was stopped due to a seat belt violation, then failed field sobriety tests, the report said.

Caldwell told Curley he was "hurting" and requested to be taken to Heritage Medical Center. The emergency room physician checked Caldwell and released him to police, the report said.

He was charged with second offense DUI and simple possession and posted $4,500 bond, jail records indicate.

Car parts stolen

A transmission, two auto batteries and three catalytic converters were stolen between Wednesday and Tuesday from outside Daniels Auto Repair, Deery Street, police said.

Traffic injury

A Shelbyville man was slightly injured after he was struck by a vehicle on Madison Street Wednesday morning, police said.

Charles Miller, 68, of Shelbyville was treated and released from Heritage Medical Center, Lt. Trey Clanton said.

Miller stepped in front of a car driven by Matt McKelvey, 18, of Shelbyville, who was not injured, at the Madison-East Lane Street intersection, according to Clanton.
