First half charge sparks Cascade soccer win

Wednesday, March 17, 2010
Michael Martin and Chris Miller split four first-half goals to stake Cascade to a commanding advantage early that turned into a 7-3 win over Giles County in Pulaski on Tuesday.

"Our passing was very good, a lot of good teammwork," Cascade coach Monica Lewis said. "Our defense played well together."

Martin put the Champions on top just seven minutes in and they never trailed. Their advantage at intermission was 4-1.

Two freshmen goalkeepers made the upper hand stand up. Cody Smith netted seven saves in the first half, while Cole Claxton pawed eight balls away from his goal in the second half.

"They have a good, strong defense in front of them with a lot of experience," Lewis said.

Miller put the finishing touches on a hat trick with a goal in the second half. Cody Wright and Trent Turner also tallied scores. Martin totaled three assists and Turner had two.

Two of the three Giles County scores came on penalty kicks.

Cascade's match with DeKalb County on Thursday was moved to Wartrace with the opening kick scheduled for 5 p.m. They go to Fayetteville to face Lincoln County on Friday night at 6.
