Driver who struck pole accused of stealing car

A man who denied he had been drinking was charged with DUI after crashing a stolen car on North Main Street shortly before midnight Monday, police said.

Daniel Knapper, 29, Highway 130 West, told officer Waymond Boyd he had only consumed methadone, but refused to take a blood test.

Knapper struck a utility pole near Wood Street intersection, bringing lines and transformers down into the street atop the car. North Main traffic was blocked for nearly eight hours.

Boyd said Knapper appeared impaired and had what appeared to be needle marks in the bends of his arms and backs of his hands.

The car's owner told police he had taken it without permission and signed a warrant on Knapper for theft over $1,000 bond.

Stereo stolen

The stereo system was stolen from a boat at Warren & Associates Auto Sales, North Main Street, between Saturday afternoon and Monday, police were told.
