Park area latest to suffer thefts from vehicles

Sunday, July 11, 2010
The wave of overnight vehicle breakins in Bedford County continues.

Several were reported in northern Shelbyville near H.V. Griffin Park overnight Wednesday, Shelbyville police said.

An iPod was stolen from an unlocked truck and a woman's bag from an unlocked car at a Drake Drive home between 10 p.m. Wednesday and 2:20 a.m. Thursday; a knife, flashlight and jewelry were taken from a truck at another Drake Drive residence; pocket change was missing from an unlocked truck at a Burning Tree Road home after 11 p.m. Wednesday; a GPS unit and wallet from two unlocked vehicles at a Wesley Street residence and a radar detector from a car at a Butler Avenue home.

Similar incidents have occurred within the past two weeks in The Meadows just southeast of Shelbyville, Covered Bridge Estates near Bell Buckle and the New Center Church-Snell Road area west of Flat Creek. All involved multiple vehicle breakins on one night in areas where thefts are rarely reported.

Other thefts reported to Shelbyville police include:

* A computer and accessories and multiple containers of prescription medication were taken from an Apache Place home between 5:15-10 p.m. Wednesday.

* A home stereo system was stolen from the trunk of a car on Saddlewood Drive overnight Wednesday. The victim told police she heard a noise outside during the night.

* A gas grill was stolen from the yard of a Highland Court home between Monday and Thursday.

* A cell phone was taken Wednesday from the seat of a vehicle at Kroger, North Main Street. A screwdriver holding a window in place had been removed, police were told.

* A man and woman were observed jamming fishing lures into her purse and his clothing Wednesday at Walmart, North Main Street. They got away before security could stop them, according to police.

* An impact wrench was stolen from a truck at the Barksdale Lane trailer park Monday. A witness who told police "something told me to look outside" said a man described as white, standing 5-feet-6 to 5-feet-8 with a beard and moustache and driving a small blue pickup truck took the wrench.

Items recovered

A backpack containing a GPS, radar detector, three car chargers, an MP3 player, flashlight, wallet, iPod, grinder and computer memory card left at Wedge Market, Depot Street, was recovered by police Thursday night.

Online fraud

Two persons have told Shelbyville police of scams by eBay users over the past few days. The scams involve sending payments for items thought to have been purchased, Det. Sgt. Brian Crews said.

A Shelbyville man said he lost $3,090 when attempting to buy a tractor listed on Craigslist, according to a report filed by officer Jeff Locke.

The man contacted the listed seller, who emailed what appeared to be an eBay listing for the same tractor and told him to follow the payment instructions. The victim wired $2,900 to a Denver man listed as an eBay agent and received what appeared to be an invoice from eBay, Locke's report said.
