Brothers runs for re-election to commission

Sunday, July 18, 2010

Janice Brothers has announced her candidacy for re-election to a 3rd District seat on the Bedford County Board of Commissioners in the Aug. 5 general election.

Brothers is the wife of the late Roger Brothers who served as commissioner for thirty years until his death in July of 2008. Janice Brothers was elected to finish his unexpired term.

Brothers is a 1966 graduate of Community High School. She worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 20 years and owns and operates her own business, Janice's Hair Care in Unionville.

Janice Brothers was an inaugural member of the Community Junior Pro Board, served as president of the Community School Booster Club, was an officer of the Parent-Teacher Organization of Community School and also served as an officer for the Community School Alumni.

Brothers has two children and six grandchildren. She is a member of Fairlane Church of Christ.

While serving on the commission the last two years, Brothers has served on the Financial Management Committee, the Zoning Board of Appeals, and the Nursing Home Board.

"During this term," she said, "the commission has been able to keep your taxes the same even with the hardships we have faced financially. We have been able to do this with no loss of employment."

Brothers said she feels that serving as a county commissioner allows her to help in making the county a better place for children to grow up and live. She said she wants to be a voice for the people of the third district.

She said that if re-elected, she will continue to fight for the district to have the best schools, roads, fire, law, and ambulance services while keeping taxes as low as possible. She said she welcomes all concerns from the third district and believes government is for the people and by the people.
