Smith asks for re-election to Commission

Tuesday, July 27, 2010

Tony Ray Smith has announced his candidacy for re-election to a 2nd District seat on the Bedford County Board of Commissioners in the Aug. 5 general election. Smith currently serves on the Courthouse and Property Committee and Zoning Board.

Smith is a United States Army veteran and served in Vietnam, worked at American National Can for 33 1/2 years as a supervisor or production and product control maintenance. For the past nine years, he has farmed. in north Bedford County. He cooks barbecue and chili for various fundraisers for Community, Cascade, Shelbyville Central High, Liberty and Chapel Hill schools and individual benefits for those who have experienced a sudden illness.

He has voted for $44 million to be spent on education without raising taxes. Due to the good financial management by the mayor, county commissioners and department heads, no county employee has been laid off during these economic times. By applying control of current spending, Bedford County government can now borrow money at a cheaper interest rate.

"If re-elected, I will continue to strive to improve the quality of education, to make Bedford County a better place to live, work and raise a family and promote industrial development by keeping the taxes as low as possible," he said.

"I appreciate your vote and I will continue to be a good servant leader and to vote my conscience for the benefit of Bedford County."
