The phones at the Tennessee Career Center on North Main Street were ringing Thursday as the announcement of 170 new jobs for Shelbyville was made.

SMW Automotive said they will open a production facility this fall at the former Summit Polymers location in Airport Industrial Park.

The company, a supplier of brake and chassis components for companies like Nissan and Volkswagen, is investing $26 million in the plant.

Lynda Reed at the state office in Shelbyville told the T-G Thursday afternoon that the company has made four job titles available, but they do not know how many would be hired for each position or how soon.

The job openings are:

* The firm is looking for maintenance technicians, who have three years experience repairing machines, as well as a high school diploma or a GED.

* Machine operators are also in demand, Reed said. Applicants must have at least two years experience operating some kind of machine, preferably a CNC (Computerized Numerical Control) machine.

Experience with metal working is a plus, Reed said, but the company may consider other machine experience as well.

* A position is open for a plant accountant, who has at least two years of education past high school and also at least two years experience in manufacturing accounting.

* A human resource assistant position is also open for someone with a high school diploma or a GED and at least two years experience in that field. Experience in QuickBooks, payroll, interviewing and hiring are required.

All applicants are required to be 18 or older.

Since the word went out Thursday, people have been calling and coming into the office to ask about the new jobs, Reed said.

You must be legally authorized to work in the United States, and having a resume "will speed things up," Reed explained.

The resume will be submitted to SMW for review, followed by a telephone interview and then a personal interview.
