Two bore serial number HL39110298E and contained a $100 bill image on top of a $5 bill, officer Matt Griffy's report said. One was passed at a drug store and the other at a convenience store.
A suspect told personnel at both stores she would pay them back the next day but wanted the bills back. Both employees refused to return the bills, Griffy said.
Two more bills, for $100 and $50 and bearing different numbers, are thought to have been passed Sunday at a fast-food restaurant. The bills were discovered to be counterfeit when taken to a bank Wednesday, a Shelbyville police report said.
Stolen check
A check stolen from a Hickerson Road mailbox was used to purchase merchandise at Walmart, according to a report filed by Detective Sgt. Scott Jones of the Bedford County Sheriff's Department.
The victim had left a $24 check in the box, which was later forged to $178.33, Jones said. Another attempt was made to obtain money from a Shelbyville bank using a withdrawal form and the account number from the check, but the person drove away after being asked for identification.
