Eagles come out on top in 3 OT marathon
Shelbyville Central's Golden Eagles scored a season-high 82 points, but it took three overtimes to accumulate them in an 82-78 District 8-AAA win over visiting Franklin County on Friday.
The game was knotted at 58-58 at the end of regulation, 63-63 after the first overtime and 69-69 after the second.
"This is the longest game I'm ever been a part of since I've been coaching," Eagle coach Kevin Thomas said. "We went into double overtime in the state championship several years ago but this is the first time I've been a part of a triple overtime game. I was proud of the way our guys battled and found a way to win at the end."
Thomas and the Eagles were defeated 76-75 by Memphis Hamilton in double overtime in the 2006 TSSAA state championship game.
Shelbyville senior Bobby Wilson canned a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 0:23 left in regulation Friday night to send the game into the first overtime.
Franklin County's E.J. Brown sank a pair of free throws to send the game into the second and made a basket as well to send the game into the third overtime.
The Eagles (5-3, 1-0) took the lead for keeps when Seth Jarrell scored at the 2:56 mark of the third overtime to make the score 73-72. Point-guard Zach Hamler followed with a basket, then Shelbyville connected on 7-of-10 free throw attempts from that point.
"We missed some free throws that really hurt us but we made some at the end of the third overtime that were really big," Thomas said. "It looked to me like we were a little stronger in the third overtime. It was hot in this gym and we had a real big crowd but we looked to be in pretty good shape."
The Eagles led 18-13 at the end of the first quarter but the Rebels cut the advantage to 28-27 by halftime.
There were seven lead changes in the third quarter with Franklin County posting a 44-43 lead going into the fourth stanza.
Shelbyville started the fourth quarter scoring five unanswered points to go up 48-44, but the Rebels matched that with a 7-0 run midway through the period to go up 55-51.
Brandon Lester scored a game-high 33 points for Franklin County and hauled in 12 rebounds. Brown pitched in 21 and T.C. Simmons added a dozen.
Wilson and Jarrell each finished with a double-double with Wilson scoring 23 points while grabbing 14 rebounds and Jarrell netting 23 with 10 boards.
Senior Rumeal Marable turned in his best performance of the year with 18 points, including eight in the overtime periods.
Shelbyville scored 50 points inside the paint.
The Eagles entertain Columbia Tuesday night in another district matchup.
