Hunger pangs? Relax. Girl Scout cookies are arriving

Thursday, February 10, 2011

Spring may be taking its time about showing up in Bedford County, but there's another annual tradition that will be here Saturday -- snow or no snow.

"The Girl Scout cookies are coming!" said Virginia Dennis, service unit manager for the Bedford County Girl Scouts.

Dennis is also a troop leader at Cascade School, where she works with 37 girls from kindergarten through seventh grade. The annual cookie sales provides money for projects, camps and other activities the scouts do throughout the year.

"We have all eight kinds," said Dennis. "And they're still only $3.50 a box."

The eight flavors are Thin Mints, Tagalongs, Samoas, Trefoils, Do-si-Dos, Lemon Chalet Cremes, Thank U Berry Much and the Dulce De Leche. In 12 regions, the Girl Scouts are cutting the last two flavors from the menu, but not here, and Dennis is happy about that.

"Last year, we actually ran out of Thank U Berry," she said. "People kept coming back for more."

If you've pre-ordered your cookies, expect to receive them sometime soon after Saturday, but if you didn't, you still have a chance.

"We'll have booths at Kroger and Walmart for the next four weekends," she said. "This Sunday we're going to be out there from noon to 2 p.m."

The exact times haven't been set for the other days yet -- snow has managed to interrupt at least one planning session -- but if you're dying for your dose of Do-si-Dos, you can always call Dennis at 389-0476.

Or -- if you've got the app -- you can find them on your smart phone. T-G city editor John Carney recently wrote a technology column about the new app.

"Little Brownie Bakers, one of two companies licensed to produce cookies for individual councils within the Girl Scouts of America, has released a Girl Scout Cookie app for iPhone and (coming soon) Android platforms," he wrote. "The app lets you search for cookie sales in your neighborhood or sign up for e-mail alerts of future sales; get information on the various cookie varieties; and even determine your personality based on your favorite variety of Girl Scout Cookie.

"If you have another type of phone, you can go to mobile.littlebrownie.com or just dial **GSCOOKIES (**472665437) from your mobile phone."
