It may seem hard to believe, but children in Bedford County will return to school next month. Many local stores are already stocking their school supply shelves.

July also means the kick-off of an important local initiative.

Bedford County United Way is launching it's fifth "Stuff the Bus" campaign to aid school-aged children in having all the supplies they need to fully participate in classes this fall.

"Over the years, we've collected an average of 7,000 items per year," said Dawn Holley, executive director of the local organization. In the next weeks, while you're shopping, pick up an extra pack of paper, pencils or other items on the drive's wish list and drop it in a collection box at any of the locations listed below.

On July 16, the Stuff the Bus campaign will be featured all day at Walmart, North Main Street. Volunteers will also be at Roses, Madison Street, and Dollar General Market, North Main Street, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to encourage shoppers to contribute. On July 22, Atmos Energy on Lane Parkway will serve as a staffed collection center.

Any other days, donors may make use of drop boxes at the partner locations Bedford County Chiropractic, Bell Buckle Café, all Dollar General Stores in Bedford County, First Community Bank locations in Shelbyville, FirstBank, Heritage Medical Center, Heritage South Credit Union, Peoples Bank of Bedford County, Pinnacle Financial, Regions Bank locations in Shelbyville, Roses, Shelbyville Recreation Center, USBank and Wartrace Town Hall.
