Among those getting ready for a new school year are the leaders of Choices that Challenge, a popular abstinence curriculum offered in middle and high schools across Bedford County.

Scott Phelps, the author of the curriculum and founder of the Abstinence and Marriage Partnership, was vacationing in Nashville this week and offered to visit Shelbyville to conduct a training session.

"Last year Scott did an excellent training that Teresa [Yoes] and I went to in Atlanta," explained Donna Thomas, director of First Choice Pregnancy Center. "Teresa called Scott to see if they had any trainings scheduled and he offered to come to Shelbyville. Needless to say, we were thrilled!"

Phelps has worked with youth in San Francisco and Chicago and each year speaks to thousands of teens around the country on the benefits of sexual abstinence until marriage. He provides training seminars nationally to help educators and parents communicate the message of abstinence to teens.

His message extends beyond abstinence and places a renewed focus on the importance and value of marriage -- and a life-long commitment.

"The A&M Partnership was founded with a vision of reaching every teenager in the country with the abstinence and marriage message," said Phelps. Through the success of this program, A&M Partnership has become one of the leading providers of abstinence education programs around the country, training hundreds of teachers and providing materials for programs in all 50 states.

"This training was great for our new volunteers, but our experienced teachers expressed how refreshing and motivating is was for them as well," said Thomas.
