Professional football in Calsonic Arena has been placed on hold for now.
The Ultimate Indoor Football League has an interest in starting a new franchise in Shelbyville.
After visiting the arena several weeks ago, league president and co-founder Andrew Haines, informed me that he had sent a proposal to start a expansion team in the arena to be in the league's Southern Division.
I'm not sure what the proposal consisted of, but I do know that a playing field would need to be purchased and installed, with an approximate price tag of $30,000.
That's a huge investment, but it might lead to other events renting Calsonic Arena that normally wouldn't do so because it currently only has a dirt or gravel floor.
It's my understanding that Celebration CEO Doyle Meadows spoke to Haines recently and they agreed to continue discussions in September, after the Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration, to explore the possibilities of bringing an expansion team to Shelbyville in 2013.
The UIFL had a deadline of Aug. 12 for an expansion team for 2012 season and more time was needed by The Celebration to explore this possibility and make sure there's enough community support for this to be successful and to further explore terms for a possible contract.
I can see why Meadows and The Celebration didn't want to rush into a decision so quickly.
The timing was really bad with The Celebration scheduled to start next week.
I still think it would be a great attraction for this community -- and a number of others think so, according to a poll on the Times-Gazette website.
As of late Monday afternoon there were 237 responses to the poll question, "Would you attend if the Ultimate Indoor Football League places a franchise at Calsonic Arena on the Celebration grounds?"
