October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and the team at Bedford County Fire Department have stepped up to do their part.

"The community has been good to the fire department," said Chief Mark Thomas, "We thought this would be a good way to give back."

Lt. Chris Reed approached the Chief with the idea, and Thomas encouraged him. With assistance from Prince Street neighbor 580 Graphics, logos were designed and the first gross of shirts in pink and blue were printed.

Great response

"It just sort of exploded," Reed said of the response from the community within days of a Facebook post.

The first and second printing of the shirts sold out - far in advance of their planned sales events.

"Chris really took the ball and ran with it, and he's done very well," said Thomas.

More shirts are being printed, at a cost of one for $15 or two for $25, with just over half of the proceeds going directly to the local cancer society. Shirts are available for purchase at the Bedford County Fire Department at 104 Prince St. or by calling 684-9223.

Shirts may also be purchased at one of three public events. Firefighters will be at Wal-Mart Supercenter on North Main from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 8 and 22, and at Pirtle & Howerton Automotive on Oct. 15.
